I am just in the process of setting up my HT system and was wondering if I should run the whole system through a UPS? Is it really worth it? I am using a SIM2 3-chip DLP projector (an Italian make) with a 110" Stewart Firehawk screen. Oppo 93 as source. The reason I ask is that I do not run my television screen via a UPS system and have not had any problems with it. I am thinking about this as a protection device rather than uninterrupted viewing. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks. I will have to figure out how to do so. I have a APC UPS that is on one balcony and will have to run a long power cable from it to the projector. Anyone know what guage please....or shall I just tell the electrician to get me the thickest he can find? :)

the gauge depends on the power consumption. If the consumption is around 1000W a 2.5 sq. mm. cable is good enough. No need to go over that. Your electrician will be able to find higher guages but that will just add to the cost.

Thanks for the information. I get an amazing picture with this projector Sim2 C3X and am really pleased they have service apparently in India. Never used them as yet - fingers crossed !!

Hello FMs,

With the knowledge showered to me by you HI-fi vision mates, I got myself a Benq LED PJ- GP2 a few months back & I am enjoying it to the core. Its a nice pj & suits all my needs. Thanks a lot to all my vision-mates!

Off late, I was thinking to get a UPS for the PJ. The situation is that we have a generator supply in our apartment, but while watching movies, there is forced break whenever there is a power cut. However, generator supply is restored within a minute, or maximum of two, I have to take the pain to go & restart the PJ, wait for its initialization and then rewind the movie (as I play via my laptop).

I was thinking to get any basic UPS made by APC for the purpose as I require back-up only to fill the downtime between the power-cut & generator supply. That's never more than 2 minutes. The power rating of my PJ is mere 45W, being LED based. I would also like to hook-up my speaker system to the UPS as well.

I would like to ask you guys if this UPS is suitable for the purpose?

Thanks in anticipation of help!

Regards,
Saket

no i already suggested in the other thread..pc normal ups is not good for any electronics...HT realated..
you need pure sine wave walas...

You are absolutely right Prosenjit. We need a pure sine wave to be on the safer side. I think that normal computer UPS are not good even for the computers too & I am serious!

The major drawback is the cost which is at least 3 times of the normal UPS, but surely, that is the way to go.

But since projectors have switched mode power supply, normal ups is more than enough is what I get from a quick Google.
No harm in going the pure sine wave way, but honestly, don't think it's a must in this scenario unless you have linear power supply devices.

Most LED pjs have laptop charger style adapters. I really don't know how much I harm them by using a normal UPS, but a quick googling also suggests that anything that has a power supply takes a beating if they do not operate on sine waves.

However, I will be a happier person if you could bring something to me suggesting that its totally safe to use normal UPS!

As I said in the other thread, it is price over convenience issue. I am using projector without UPS. In Pune, the power is fairly stable except for Thursdays - even in Summer. I have had occassional trips - say maybe once in 15 days. Two things have dissuaded me against a UPS:

- mine is a 350W projector and it will need a 700VA UPS, pure sine wave with instantaneous switchover
- such an UPS will cost quite a lot and take up a lot of space too with the battery too (space is premium everywhere but carries an extra premium in my small HT room :))

Price/ Convenience issue: very right. Just that I don't want to fry my PJ with improper UPS. In that case, I am happy taking small breaks (read multiple intermissions). However, my LED pj will draw only 45W of power, hence the smallest of those would suffice.

Also, this is my first year in this new apartment, so I don't know about the power conditions much here. My earlier home was Dad's company house in a colony which had almost zero power cuts. So never bothered getting a UPS for any appliance. I ran my PC without UPS for years (its still alive) once it's battery got depleted!

I have a regular sine wave ups (Microtek) for my entire home and it works perfectly with my PJ and audio equipments. I don't even experience a blip. Just the AC turns off as it is connected to AEH.
But i had to flip a switch on the back of the ups that basically tells the ups to kick in sooner. Before that my tv would blink, but not anymore.

reading this thread i get it that you recommend a sine wave UPS, but my question is what if i need backup only for 2 mins, just to switch off the PJ, won't this suffice.

I just got hold of HD20 and i want to atleast give it enough time to switch off properly in case of a power failure.

Space is a huge restraint as my HT is in my bedroom.

noh..you did not get the point..
sine wave is being recomended not for back up...but for the cont feed.
grid like power is needed for any device to be run properly for long time..
be it a fridge or a projector

I think a small UPS with a built in gel cell will easily do the trick-you need to be aware that the cots of replacement battery is more than the cost of the UPS and proper power down sequence will prolong the bulb life. I use a large 3KVA pure sinewave online UPS but used a smaller APC unit initially till I upgraded-and yes it is expensive!

so the above should do fine just to turn off the projector within 2-3 mins...

off course it will give back up of 15 mins..no problem with that.but your HT will be damagaed runnning via normal ups.....got the point?
only pure sine wave wala is good for running HT or home appliiances

For HD20 600VA will not work. You need to go for 800VA or more. This UPS trips when mains power is off.
