Hi,
I am new to HiFi Vision, I am from Kolkata; I want a basic 2channel stereo set-up for my 15*13 feet room. I have tight budget. I've decide to buy Yamaha A-S500 Integrated amp. and for speakers, I've selected Kolkata based Allied Accoustics'(sic) TS 803 floor standing speakers. They are asking for Rs 15000/ a pair. They sale products only form their Behala, (Kolkata) office-cum-manufacturing base. Does anybody in Kolkata or elsewhere have any idea, how the said company is.....? In UK, there is a company named Allied Acoustics (with correct spelling) but the company in question has wrong spelling 'Accoustics' though 'what's in a name ?'

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay. I am from Kolkata as well.

I once used Allied's Integrated Amp 10-12 years ago and they were bad. I know this company and they are not good at all.

If you have 15K for speakers I would suggest you to go for a PSB Alpha B1 or Boston Acoustics A 26 which is priced at 24K+ but hifimart is having a great offer for Rs. 19.9K or you may go for some used higher end speakers like MS Aviano 2 or MA BX2.

hi about 20k you could buy Wharfedale Diamond 121/ diamond 10.1..for 30k diamond 122/ diamond 10.2 bookshelf speakers.....good reviews, modern design, etc. pls. read up. hifimart has them on sale...

Yamaha AS-500 is a good amplifier going by reviews and testimonials. If you are going for such a good amp then please do not spend money on sub-par speakers. It is better to save , wait a little and then buy something which will be much (and I mean much) better than this. In future you perhaps will regret spending 15K on these.
Now I have not heard the speakers that you have mentioned, but purely going on trend I should say floor standers costing 15K is unlikely to be much good. If you are on a budget (most of us are actually, although the forum may have you believe otherwise :) ), then consider Sonodyne's range. You can easily take an audition at their stores in South City, though auditions at their stores are not often the best experience. My Sonodyne bookshelves sound better than they did at their listening room...tells a story I guess.
If you can consider pre-owned options then there can be many great speakers to be had in this speaker for your price or a little more.
If it was me, I would not pair As-500 with any sub-par product. I could very well be proven wrong about Allied Acoustics speakers, in that case my apologies to them for calling their product 'sub-par', but you get the picture I am trying ti paint here.

Audition audition audition. If you have decided on the Yam, buy it and carry it with you for auditions. Consider Q Acoustics 2020i, Usher S520 Wharf 121 and DALI Zensor 1s. These speakers are all sub 30k. Or, look for used gear. How much is the A-S500 these days?

As has been mentioned above, your Yamaha amp deserves a better speaker than the one you've shortlisted. Try these instead

The Tannoy V1's have gotten very good reviews. They cost 20k and are available from this e-retailer Tannoy Mercury V1i

The Wharfedale Diamond 1s also have good reviews. They cost 24k and are available at Wharfedale DIAMOND 10.1

The Dali Zensors have found a lot of converts in the forum recently. Their Zensor 1 bookshelves cost about 19k (before bargaining). There is a Dali dealer in Kolkata - SKS TRADERS, 31-N-1Siddi Nath Chatterjee Road (+91 9831163529)

The Boston Acoustics A26 are also rated very well and cost 20k. They are available at Boston Acoustics A 26 Bookshelf Speaker

Or, if you think you want bigger speakers, Pioneer has a new award winning VFM speakers - the SP-FS52. They cost 22k and are fullsize floorstanders SP-FS52 | They are tuned by Andrew Jones and are supposed to punch much above their weight.

Please spend some time reading reviews for the aforementioned speakers. If possible, listen to them - they are all available in Kolkata apart from the Boston. And then decide

Hi Koushik,
Thanks a lot for responding. BTW, from where hi-end used speakers are sold ? I know only one place in Kolkata, that is Metro Music near Metro galli

Is there any place for used gear in Kolkata ?
Yamaha A-S500 is being sold @29000/- from Bose Electro Acoustics
1/1A Kailash Ghosh Road, Philips Housing Complex kol-8

Keep a close watch on the classifieds section here.

29k is a decent price. For slightly more you could also consider the Marantz PM6004 available at HiFiMart.

Metro gali doesn't stock highend speakers. You may find some diamonds in the dust but that is it. There are all about Sonodyne, Philips, low end Technics etc. There are few individuals who deal with real highend equipments but they ask for atrociously high. You have to bargain hard. I will share their contacts later with you but as Shuv said, keep an eye on the classified section over here.

Thanks Koushik :)

The Yamaha showroom is no longer at Park Circus, they have shifted to Raja Basanta Roy Road, it is near Kalighat Metro / Rashbihari Crossing. Walking toward Gariahat from Rashbihari, you will need to take a right about 50 meters from Rashbihari crossing. Ask someone, and then keep walking straight. You will find Yamaha AV Square on the left.

Visit SKS Traders, exact opposite to Padmapukur pond on Sarat Bose Road. Monday closed.

Check Harmonie Audio in New Alipore, close to Hindusthan Sweets. 08697095512 / 983008504.

There are other shops as well, Digital Acoustics, ProFX at Hindusthan Road....other FMs can guide you.

And yes you MUST check the Dali Zensor 1, it is hard to find better speakers at this price in my opinion. Certainly the best that I have heard, and hence I own them! :)

You have Sonodyne SIA320, is it better than Yamaha A-S500 ?
Have heard that SIA 320 is a bright sounding amp

I think Yamaha AS 500 should be better than Sia 320. People do say though that Yamaha is bright, I found the same with my AVR. Now I have not heard the Sonodyne and Yamaha amplifiers side by side so an apple to apple comparison is not possible for me. All I can say is that my Zensor 1 pairs well with the Sia amplifier.
I did take a demo of AS 500 at the Yamaha shop, but those were with Yamaha floor standing speakers, do not remember the model. I remember distinctly having the impression that the amp was being let down by the speakers. I do not recall the model of the speakers though, sorry. I came away with the impression that AS-500 is a decent amp.
