Favourite speakers under INR 20k

Good idea there, let me try maybe some blu-tak between the granite and the cabinet surface, and blu-tak between the speakers and the granite. i wanted to actually get 1' square MDF boards to place between the granite and the table, and i am also considering getting hold of a couple of telephone directories to keep the speakers on. The audioengines showed marked improvement when placed on a couple of heavy books.

I tried using MDF board - it does not help in any way. While MDF may be acoustically "dead", not having a a 100% immobile platform fastened to the supporting structure may actually introduce another source of vibrations. Reducing contact area with spikes or 5 spots of stick-on (centre+4 corners) may be the best bet.

Hi Psycho, how is Nad-Marantz cdp synergy. Want to get a used CD player, but used Nad CDP is not easily available. BTW do these old CDPs reads CD-Rs well? or you think it is better to wait for a couple of months and get Nad 515bee@$299(which reads mp3s also)when my sister will be coming from US? or better still get a DAC?.

The NAD-Marantz-Usher synergy is excellent, with the Marantz being on the brighter side of neutral, and the Usher being super detailed (with therefore a tendency to sound bright when paired with more revealing equipment), they work well with the NAD's warm sound signature. The overall effect is a smooth and detailed treble, which is very musical and not at all harsh. I suspect I can get better sound out of this setup if i were to swap out the NAD for an Arcam or something like that, something that's warm, but is more detailed than the NAD. But that is just guesswork

The Marantz plays all discs without batting an eyelid. I use a lot of CD-Rs and have not faced any trouble. If MP3 is important then maybe a Cambridge Audio DVD99 might be a good option. Great sounding as a CD player, and with a hack reads MP3s, and it also has a USB input. And it costs 14k (or less).

Thanks for the info Psycho, but are'nt these DVDps supposed to be inferior to the dedicated CDPs . Not sure how different it will be from the mass market players like philips for audio quality. The price does seem attractive, though. In comparison, Nad 515bee is a dedicated CDP with just the mp3 support.

there are no strict rules like that dude. You put in a good transport, good constructoin and a good DAC (and a good clock) into the box, and a DVD player can easily match or outdo a dedicated CD player that has inferior versions of any of those components.

The Oppo 980 and 983 are regarded to very good CD players. The DVD99 is built by the same OEM manufacturer as the Oppos and to our ears sounded as good or better than the Oppo. No idea about the NAD 515 though.

Next time on weekend before a serious listen, leave the NAD on for a minimum of 4 hours (dont play) then hear the difference in hours 4 to 6 of listening ....

he he he, exactly the same one spiro....i ended up going the next weekend and picking it up. But the good thing was, because I missed the bus, I decided I needed to make that weekend count, so I joined a gym, and I've been going regularly to the gym since then So net-net I am really grateful I missed that bus.

I have only seen ProFx near Bombay store have not seen any Wharfedale showrooms there. ??????

Sorry for being late as I was out of town for sometime,but I'm back to base now.Hope you're enjoying every bit of it.I never knew about Ushers before I joined our forum.And even after that I thought these speakers from such brand must be super expensive.Then saw your quest for speakers under 20k and was keenly following it .I'll also be setting up a HT system for myself probably early next year as I sold my Marantz + BIC Venturi bookshelf (bought used) to my childhood friend.I've also gained a lot from your music taste and collections.
Sorry if I was off-topic , Once again congratulations and wish you all the best and hope to drop in someday (Btw I stay near Anna University).

there is no conclusion to this thread even after so many posts.

Usher S520 > 20k. So, strictly speaking.. out of price range.

Could we consider Wharfedale 10.2 (MRP: 20k, after discount 18k) to be best buy under INR 20k.

hey rohigupt, this thread wasn't really meant to have a conclusion. The Usher is only a tiny bit more than 20k and IMO so much superior to the stuff below 20k that if you can afford it then it's a definite winner. If you can't all the other speakers below it have their advantages and disadvantages and you can pick them according to preference.

I have an Onkyo 5205 HT with the receiver being TX-SR307. It serves the purpose for movies, but after going through this thread and speaking to Cranky, i would like to try out the Ushers for my music listening. Just wanted to know how do you think it will pair up with the Onkyo. Or if you could give me some other speaker recos which would go well with my receiver.

@manu - if you're a bass head don't go for the Ushers, by all means go for the Wharfedale 10.2 i am sure it will make you more happy than the Ushers. I bought the Ushers frmo ARN systems in Bangalore for 22k.

@anirvan - the 5205 AVR is rated at 100W one channel driven.......so i can guess conservatively that with two channels driven it would be more like 50W (i am not sure if it works that way, but i'm just guessing). 50W is the rated power for the Ushers, so I think it should, make a good match. And it runs very well with the 7W of my tripath, so i don't think the power of the amp should be a concern. Do try and audition if you can though.
