Floorstanders or Bookshelfs?

How do you plan to fit in floorstanders? Do you intend to remove the media cabinet? It would probably be better of you gave a layout of the room.

The top shelf of the media center is at about 27" - 30", if my guesswork is correct.
The speakers are better served if you move then to the front edge.
In my experience, hollows below the speaker, as in a media center, can start adding to the overall sound.
I have a entertainment center and tried "cubby hole" placement, see the link below.

The speakers misbehaved so much that I started doubting whether I had purchased the right speakers.

The idea of stands is to simulate the floating of speakers in air. I learned this after I got stands.
Gel pads on the top plate, spikes on the bottom plate and a mass loaded column.
All of these contribute towards tighter precise bass, less muddiness, etc.
In my case, they really help in moving them as far away as permissible from walls and providing adequate separation between them.

In your current setup, it seems like you may not have the opportunity to do any room treatment.
In such cases, speaker placement and support from AVR/IA in the form of tone/channel controls are your options.
Keep a lookout for front ported speakers; they will be more manageable as compared to rear ported ones.
There is hard wall corner on the left and glass back on the right. These surface may pose some challenges.

Cheers,
Raghu

Currently I might not be looking at picking up floorstanders. Hence this is an issue I won't have to deal with. :)

@Raghu, thanks for your detailed comments about your own experiences with regards to placing your speakers on a media center unit.

My plan is to get the speakers first and then work on the other aspects like room treatment (might not be possible), stands (will have to see if they make a difference by borrowing a pair from a friend or two, etc.

Also, I can move this unit around but it is something that I am not very keen doing right now.

Both Stands/speaker placement and room play a lot of role in the final output. If it is BS, then stands are a must. You can go through DIY route or purchase a branded pair of stands. I am a noob but can vouch for the difference that stands and speaker placement do to the experience. Please allocate some funds for stands definitely.

I got them off Bajaao for 7 thousand rupees.

Thanks for all the inputs with regards to stands and placement. I know placement is a big thing with speakers and it'll be something I'll do. For now my main concern is picking up a good/great pair of speakers. :)

niccolewis,
Did you get a chance to hear Dalis/Wharfedales/PSBs? Hit WhatHiFi show this weekend and check what is out there.
Check out used speakers, if you are OK with the idea. Sometimes there are great bargains to be had here.
Speakers are passive units and least risk to pick up used.
Cheers,
Raghu

Unfortunately no luck with listening to those speakers yet. Yah, I am excited about the WhatHiFi show. Do you have to pick up tickets for it? I registered on the website but didn't get any confirmation or anything as of yet. I'm hoping that there will be some speakers for audition there.

Used speakers isn't a bad idea but I need to figure out if they are still working fine, etc. I'll look for good deals on here and other sites for used speakers.

In case anyone can help me out here I'd appreciate a number for Vector Systems, Bangalore? I tried calling them a few times this week, including trying 10 mins ago, but all I get is weird static and a modem tone and beeps.

niccolewis,
Regn for the show the first time did not work for me either. The second time around I got an email.
Try again and it may work for you. The one thing I did differently the second time was to fill in favorite audio brands (non-mandatory field)

If you are interested to hear the difference between optimal and rowdy performance due to placement, PM me.
You can come home and have a real world feel in an untreated listening space a.k.a living room.

Cheers,
Raghu

Thanks a lot of the invite Raghu! What speakers do you have currently?

I'll try and re-register for the event. Let's see if that work! I'm planning to visit the show tomorrow and Saturday, maybe we can meet up then? Would love to meet people in the audiophile sphere that have been around it for a longer time.

My chain is:
Source(s) - Foobar on laptop via USB, ASUS O!Play via Toslink
DAC - Schiit Modi 2 Uber
Pre-amp - Marantz PM7001 (even though it is a capable IA, I am using it as a preamp + volume/tone control unit)
Pwr-amp - Outlaw Audio M2200 monoblocks
Speakers - KEF R300s (previously B&W 303s)
Stands - Sound Foundation (don't know the model)
Interconnects - stuff that I could lay my hands on (not much of a cable guy)

Cheers,
Raghu

Thanks for the replies and the invite. I'd love to take a listen to your setup.

Ironically I also use Foobar and also own an Asus O'play which I recently replaced with an HTPC that I threw together for my TV system.
