I have a pretty basic setup consisting of Yamaha 473 which is connected to an Astonia subwoofer. It's a local subwoofer which is around 3 years old and have performed well for me. Source is WDTV, Raspberry Pi and Pana blu ray. Since a few days, I am experiencing a strange issue.
The subwoofer vibrates every 9-10 seconds! It's as if listening to someone's heart beats although at a very slow interval. The vibration is extremely low but audible when it's completely silent. Otherwise one has to feel the speaker vibrate to listen to it. The reason why it's strange is because I am not able to figure out why it's doing so!
Here's what I have tried
1. Tried removing the signal cable and the hum stops.
2. This means that technically the issue is with the signal but the AVR is off and even disconnected from the power source!
3. The Tata Sky box is powered on and is on standby. If this is switched off the hum disappears. But the other strange thing is that this box is not connected to the AVR by HDMI but by an optical cable. Removing this cable is not making any difference!
4. Tried switching the power sources (different plug points but same board) but it's not helping.
5. Can it be the power source? But nothings changed.
6. One strange coincidence which happened at the very strange time when this is ongoing is the AVRs USB slot. I used the USB slot to power my RPI and it used to work quite well. Since that day the USB slot is not able to power my RPI!

Need some help as I am not able to figure out where the problem lies. It cannot be the AVR as the hum appears even when its off and unplugged. The tata sky box is not connected to the AVR but switching it off seems to stop the hum.

Have switched off the sub as I don't want to cause any damage to it or my AVR.

Hi

Possibly a loose connection inside the sub board....dry solder issue...which happens to some subs after 2-3 years of use......

Get it checked with someone who is capable of repairing Hifi gear.....

If that's the case why does it go away when the signal is removed? Also how does it coincide with the USB on the AVR unable to supply power to RPI? Just trying to get to the root of the issue before I take the sub for repairing. If I switch off the Tata Sky box the pulsating noise goes away.

Hi

Have you tried a different AC outlet for the sub? Also another subwoofer cable? In some cases , there could be shielding / grounding issues....

Could you try a coaxial cable from tata sky to avr? Your avr does not support hemi?

There seems to be some interference which is causing this. Try switching cables.

Regarding Pi, don't you get a coloured box on the top right corner? How is pi connected to your setup? Avr usb is not powerful enough to power the Pi. My marantz as well as Airtel set top box get the Colored box.

I've removed the TSky output to the AVR completely. Also, I don't understand what's a colored box? Is it something to do with the power?
