Dear Friends,

I am looking for a good quality treadmill and elliptical in Bangalore for home use. I am a "heavy weight" person :D and looking for a "strong" treadmill and elliptical that can hold around 90-100Kgs of weight.

My total budget is around 1.5-2L for both together.

Any suggestions / reliable shops / dealer reference would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John.

You can call Viraj My friend in Mumbai - 9821333765 He makes his own Gym Equipment -Sky Health Inc. Has presence of sales and service ( which is very important BTW) in B'lore.
Pls give my reference.

If you are heavy-weight then treadmill can put lot of stress on your knees over a period of time, IMHO. Stick to low impact equipments like Recumbent / Stationery exercise bike other than Elliptical which you have already selected. Since you have budget, look for those with heart rate monitor.

guys - are there any equipment available for audiophiles - who can listen to music/ watch a movie but along with that keep on exercising legs. Elliptical and treadmill cause a lot of head movement. For example, something like sewing machine the tailors use. Their upper half is almost stationary, while they use their legs. Maybe something for hands as well. I know it may sound funny at first, but a lot of couch potatoes would love such a equipment :) Also, given the time spent at home is extremely low. I get out of my house by 8:30 and reach back by 9:30 for regular office. Finding time for both exercise and audio is a challenge on a daily basis.

I have been using treadmill in gyms for a while. Now that I have a bigger home, I want to setup a small gym in my new home. Well, I am around 88 Kgs now and I think treadmill is okay :D. I don't run. I do brisk walk at 6-7kmph at an incline for 45 mins and then 20 mins on elliptical.

Bike is boring for me :).

Thanks,
John.

Why do you need an equipment at all? Just keep shaking your legs in and out like butterfly. :D:p Well, I am serious. That helps too.

Actually, my suggestion is:
Stand and work as much as possible.

I do it for 40 to 60% of the time I spend in office for the last few months.
I have got myself a stand made in my cabin that suits my height.

I feel more fit and energetic and my concentration has improved a lot.
It is science. No matter how much work out you do at your gym, it cannot counteract the damage caused by sitting for long hours. Your body's metabolism gets tuned to sitting and that's bad for health.

So you have done something good for your health in a typical working day so you can relax, sit back or lie down and enjoy your music or movies without the guilt feeling of not doing enough physical activity that day.

did you try a stepper along with the standing desk?

You are right - a lot can be achieved even without equipment. I did a web search and came across few articles, this is one of them - Fitness for Couch Potatoes
Breathing exercises (prayanam) may also be tried. Please share any good apps/ videos along this line. Sorry jk I hope I am not hijacking your thread. Why not make gym and AV room same?

Not at all buddy :) Even I was thinking about the same for a while and I thought it would be too much to ask for an audiophile sound during workout ;) I am very glad that you brought it up.

Working out in the gym or jogging in the beach or park would be more interesting as you do not get bored. You tend to get bored using these equipment's after couple of months. I have both the treadmill and elliptical but do not use it as I did when I bought couple of years back.

Unfortunately, not everyone gets the time and spirit to go the gym. During monsoons jogging also becomes messy. I was given 6 months free membership in Gold's gym but I went only for 6 days. (1 kg protein powder is lying unopened :D) Distance was one problem but strenuous office hours, carrying all the gym stuff and tuning into that mode itself was a big challenge to me. Equipments people tend to get bored with. But like anm suggested, if we can have some entertainment during home workouts, it will be great. I have seen many people having a TV in front of their machines. I also suggest Yoga, you never get bored. The more you do, the more you like it.

Hey Isoton,

Thanks for the details. I will definitely let you know any useful information I get on this. I am planning to check out different brands some time next week that are available in Bangalore.

Thanks,
John.

Totally Agree :). I like to watch some TV during my treadmill workouts. Usually prefer some nice serials / movie comedy clips during my workouts so that I can finish one workout session with 2 episodes :).

Hey John,

My thoughts....

Please ask yourself how much treadmill, elliptical activity are you doing right now. How much, will you be doing in the future. Once you have reached your goal the amount of exercise will become much less. Better to invest the amount (which will be much less) in a good personal trainer and reach your desired goal. It will be faster. If you want an equipment try and find a good secondhand equipment if possible. Many gyms sell their equipment. They are professional grade and single use is okay. It will be available at a fraction of amount. Once you are comfortable with it and you see that your usage is regular after you have reached your goal then think of buying a new equipment. Please buy on this thought.

Sid.

I have used Gyms extensively and also seeked the help personal trainers. It has worked for me. But was not able to sustain because of the pain involved in getting prepared to go to gym. It turns out that I need to set aside close to 3 hours to get a 1 hour workout in gym. Mainly due to traffic in Bangalore to reach the Gym after or before office hours. So dropped the idea.

I just need to get some good aerobic workout to keep myself fit. I am not looking for weight loss or any other goals :).

I have used treadmills extensively when I used to live in US. So I know that I will use it. I am getting two equipment so that I don't get bored with just one equipment.

I always stay away from used gym equipment.

Really appreciate your comments though.

Thanks,
John.
