Got New Onkyo NR-609 today

as per at present setup ,i dont see much difference in audio with my old setup ,SONY HCD ,CRT and play on mini. but for movies yes i can see the difference ,as there are lot of options available need some suggestions from members for fine tuning AVR to get best audio quality for movies.

An amplifier is only one part of the system. You have slowly fine tune the other parts - good cables, a flat panel, speakers, etc.

As a first step, run the Audessey system on your Onkyo to set the speakers up. After you do that, watch a few movies and manual adjust the speaker settings.

Cheers

Hi Venkat,

That's true ,yes i have got good 16 SWG cable from Dubai itself ,and regarding speakers not as am planning to move back to India within 1 or 2 years i can buy them all.

At present i should enjoy with existing system and i have 5.0 speakers which are of Sony.i think i may not get a good listening exp without a sub.any way lets see in future.

Venkat can you clarify bellow can set 4 or 6 Ohm on nr-609 for bellow spekaers see the output of nr-609 and sony speakers config.

Onkyo NR-609 ,which has got power outputs ,100 Watts per Channel at 8 Ohms, 20 Hz?20 kHz, 0.08%, 2 Channels Driven, FTC; 125 Watts per Channel at 6 Ohms, 1 kHz, 0.1%, 2 Channels Driven, FTC.

and i have old SONY MHC-RV900 5.0 speaker which i am going to use it with onkyo NR-609 ,specs of the speakers as follows.
The following measured at ac 120,127.220,240 Volts 50/60 HZ

Continues RMS Power output (reference)

Front Speakers 100 + 100 Wats (6 Oms at 1 kHz,10% THD)
Center Spaker 40 Watts ( 8 ohms at 1 kHz 10 % THD)
Rear Speakers 40 +40 Watts (6 Ohms at 1 kHz 10 % TSD).

You have to set the front speakers at 6 ohms, the centre at 8, and the surrounds at 6 again. You can do this in the Speaker Set Up in 609.

Dear Vekat,

I checked there is only settings on receiver is 4 or 6 Ohms and its not specific to any speakers.so i did set it to 6.

and some clarification i need you suggestions bellow.

1.What exactly is HD audio ,do i get hd audio without an HDMI ,or with optical still i can get HD audio.
2.what audio presets i can see on AVR ,like DTS ,Dolby,PII - example i am watching a movie Avtar which .mkv file .
my doubt does audio we get what it original format or we change it to dts ,Dolby according to our requirement on AVR,little confusion.

I have set on my playon mini pass through for audio ,as per my knowledge it should show on AVR what ever the format is movie is in from Playon right.

Please clarify.

1.What exactly is HD audio ,do i get hd audio without an HDMI ,or with optical still i can get HD audio.

HD or High Definition audio is a 5.1 or a 7.1 codec that stores the audio in uncompressed format. If there is some compression, it will be lossless compression. What you will get is the full frequency of sound, greater clarity, and a larger soundstage.

2.what audio presets i can see on AVR ,like DTS ,Dolby,PII - example i am watching a movie Avtar which .mkv file .
my doubt does audio we get what it original format or we change it to dts ,Dolby according to our requirement on AVR,little confusion.

At the outset, you should get your source to bitstream audio. When you do that, the AVR will receive the original codec that it will decode.

Onkyo has a very useful feature called 'Listening Mode Preset'. With this, you can tell the receiver to go to a particular mode, depending upon what signal it is receiving. The best thing to do would be to set the listening mode to be the same as what the receiver receives - Dolby to Dolby, DTS to DTS, etc.

According to Onkyo, 'You can assign a default listening mode to each input source that will be selected automatically when you select each input source. For example, you can set the default listening mode to be used with Dolby Digital input signals. You can select other listening modes during playback, but the mode specified here will be resumed once the AV receiver has been set to standby.'

See page 55 of the manual.

I have fooled around with the settings, but have always found that the original codecs are the best. Many times when I changed Dolby to DTS, the system added unnecessary gain and noise. The better option would be to change the audio codecs in the media if it is available.

I have set on my playon mini pass through for audio ,as per my knowledge it should show on AVR what ever the format is movie is in from Playon right.

That plus bitstreaming and listening modes would, as the yanks say, get you to a 'you are all set' state.

Cheers

Thanks Venakt ,

i will be disturbing you when ever i need some clarification.
after setting up 5.0 speakers ,i did find quality of audio is not clear and crispy for movies am not happy with the output(with 2 channels i use to get better sound with same speakers playing from Playon directly through my Sony HCD for movie) i doubt there is some fine tuning is required but for audio with 2 channels its ok.

i have only 5 speakers ,if you can see in my previous thread i have posted the pictures, these speakers are normal or dipole (it has got 2 speakers and 1 tweeter in each single set of L and R). and i have center and surround 2 speakers.

so now setting cross over frequencies ,will you please help me how to decide on cross over frequencies i think this should play imp role on sound quality.

any other suggestion to improve the audio quality

Regards
Sunil
