Hi all, this is my first post. I wanna order a BluRay player in US and my friend will get it for me. I shortlisted a few players :

1. Oppo 83 (is 499 USD)
2. Sony BDP-S570 (is 180 USD)
3. Sony BDP-S470 (same as 570 without WiFi etc -> is 218 USD)
4. ???? Any other player ? Panasonic/LG/Samsung ones??

I think Sonys will get firmware update with 3D later.. and price is lesser than Oppo.. plus i heard they are fast and light especially the newer ones.:licklips:

Oppo is very expensive but has good Audio, video on blu-ray plus good upscaling and can play many formats... plus I think I can soft/hard mod it in future (is soft-mod that available anywhere apart from purchasing it)?

I have not yet bought a TV yet but will probably buy a 40/42 inch TV in near future. :o
I have a 40 odd collection of Bluray discs purchases in the States (purchased since 2007 in good deals - with some disney BDs as low as 10 dollars a piece :licklips:).. don't have the ones yet and I don't intend to mod it soon but will at some point of time.. and the network streaming feature is cool too.

Max,
You already got all the information in front of you.

If you don't bother about 3D Oppo is the best provided you are o.k with price and which is well worth of it. Or Panasonic BD80 is an excellent budget player.
If 3D is a criteria then Samsung BD-C6900. Avoid sony as much as possible.Moding is a bit pain. You may feel its not necessary as of now, but definitely feel short handed when region coding becomes more serious.

A few points to decide would be the usage of the bd player -

1. Is it for movies alone or will also double as a cd player?
2. Will your movie watching be on BD discs/rips/DVD...
3. Will you be using the BD player as part of a HTPC setup?

If you want an all rounder go for the Oppo, If you want it specifically for BD discs go for the Panny BD80 or similar model. If you are going to use in an HTPC setup then buy something that has N wifi support as its more convenient.

I dont know if I am already too late, but IMHO for the size of ur display, I dont think u will find a great deal of difference between most good upscalers for DVD playback, in fact u will be very happy with a samsung DVD player bought in India and hacked for regionfree play back. Dont buy the Samsung from USA , as it cannot be hacked. For Bluray Playback, Any of the latest Sony or Samsung will give u the same quality as Oppo, at a lot cheaper price.

It is only when u go beyond 60" and into projection, u will find the Oppo a Better Deal for playing ur DVDs. For Blurays the performance will be the same.

If u want to play music - I wouldn't know the deal because I only use my Home Theater for watching video content.

I have a samsung DVD1080 Player from the USA , a Samsung DVD1080 Player from India, Oppo OPDV971 DVD Player & OPPO BD83 Bluray Player.
