Usually there is a life time counter in the menu. Also, while checking let the projector be on for 10-15 mins. If the lamp is weak, there should be an indication. Apart from this, I am not sure if there is any other check.

I am told that the lamp hour counter can be manually reset so that can't be an accurate state. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes that is correct. The counter is ideally reset when the lamp is changed. You could refer the manual to find out about any tell tail alerts for a weak lamp, such as an alert on image or on the projector itself.

Please try the projector for atleast an hour and see whether there is any variation in the PJ output. That could be one indication that the lamp is bit old. Also inspect interiors and see whether there is presence of dust or old markings.
