HT: Where to buy in Chennai !!!

Hi All,

I am a newbie when it comes to this AV equipments. Until, i started my search for a home theatre system, i never knew there existed so many showrooms in chennai with wide variety of confusing options.

I was able to narrow down my wish list on the Home theatre systems.

WharfeDale Diamond 9.5 - Tower Rs 28000, 9 CM - Center- Rs 103950, 10-DFS - Rear - Rs 11150, Sub-SW150 Rs 19500, or 10MX Rs 28000.

Receiver - Denon - AVR 1611 - Rs 30000 or AVR 1911 Rs 42500 or a Marantz 5005.

I need the help of the experts in guiding me to a reliable seller and let me know if these prices are ok or needs to be brought down.

As i am new, dont want to be taken for a ride. Please suggest !!!!

prices that you have listed seem to me like MRP rates, though I think there's a typo in the centre speaker price. Bargain for at least a 10% discount - i think u can get 15% if you haggle well.

The dealer for the wharfedale is Grand Cinema in Kodambakkam. Denon is available with quite a few dealers. For towers I think Denon 1911 would be a better option as 1611 doesn't have enough power to drive the towers.

Find out if any dealer is willing to give you a home demo. I got a home demo for my speakers & paid only after I was satisfied.

When i had the audition at Grand Cinema, it was with 1311 receiver only and they said it will be sufficient to drive the 9 series. let me check with them again.

The prices mentioned are after discount and i still feel its on the higher side.

The Denon 1911 or higher will be reqd for the Diamond 9.5...1611 and below will struggle to drive these floorstanders.
If you can stretch your budget suggest you go for the 2311 which has pre outs--useful when you want to add a power amp or integrated for stereo..
Lot of scope for negotiatng prices down from your quote...push for atleast 15% with complementary cables/interconnects..

I got Polk speakers from Pro FX. They had a discount sale a couple of months ago. I got a package worth Rs. 69k for Rs. 58k. It includes TSi400 towers (1 pair), cs10 centre speaker (1 No), psw125 subwoofer (1 No), Tsi100 bookshelves for surround (1 pair) & 5 m of subwoofer cable.

When I went to the showroom, they first gave me an audition of the Tsi400 with either the Denon 1311 or 1611 & I was getting ready to walk out as there was practically no bass response. Then the salesman asked me what receiver I had & I told him Denon 1910. Then he connected the towers to the 1910 & voila!!! - the speakers were displaying their true prowess.

I overheard another customer who was auditioning higher end speakers telling that salesman that he would prefer a home demo before finalizing the order. I too followed suit & asked them for a home demo. I paid an advance of Rs 10,000 to book the speakers at the special rate as it was the last day of the sale & they gave me a demo the following week.

I was quite happy with the performance of the speakers during the home demo & since they had brought a brand new set of speakers for the demo, they just left it with me & collected the balance payment while leaving.

In fact, i was at ProFx yesterday evening for a demo and i had the demo of the same stuff that you have mentioned except for the TSi100, it had the OWM3. I was not very happy with the demo as well for the same reasons. There was no punch or bass. I think they has the 1610 AVR, maybe it could be a reason. Let me check with them again. The price quoted is again 68000 without any free cables.

I will renegotiate with them and will go in for anothe demo this weekend.

There is one more hifi-speakers shop in Narayana swamy chetty Road (T-Nagar) near SONY (SUBA sree) show room .

They also have hi-fi speakers and nice demo room. I have been there once. Forgot the name of the showroom. You can easily find out if u go there.

You may try there as well.

I went to cressida AV zone at R A Puram today. Met with a guy called Suresh, nice guy with a very good sales attituide who took me thru various models and options.

We auditioned Yamaha 5.1 Satellite package (Yamaha 280.. very nice for that size), Boston Acoustic and Mordaunt Short. Mordaunt Short was very good and liked it very much. Have asked him to send the quote.
MS Tower - Aviano 6, Centre-Aviano 5, Rear - Aviano 1 and Sub Aviano 7.

Now we liked both MorShort and Wharefdale 9.5 set. Are both equally good? The sales guy was saying that denon 1311 would be enough to drive these, are these true, will it be good enough.

We also did an auditon of Stereo Amp Marantz 5003 with MorShort Aviano 2 Speakers, the music was heavenly bliss. Now, i know the difference between Audio profiles and HR profiles.

I checked with the Mordaunt Short dealers in bangalore and chennai, their disc% is only 10% but cressida is giving 25%, will they have this much margin or can it be a demo piece. When i checked with them i was told, it would be brand new only.

Please tell me if anything i need to check with them. Also, let me know which one i should go for. Wharfedale or MRShort. I like the sound quality of both, so looking at other aspects.
