iAUDIO IN BENGALURU-AUDIO YATRA CONTINUES

Hi guys,

Didn't realise that this thread doesn't show up in unread posts or the forum. Great to hear you guys had whale of a time.

soundsgreat (erstwhile member of our forum)

This is news to me. I think his name is Srikant. Would like to meet him sometime to check out his creations.:licklips: Can someone provide me his contact details?

" it is very difficult to identify a loudspeaker system that has universal appeal - some do well with certain types of music (even certain cds) - on one system a certain cd might be an intolerable listen, and on the other - very grand - and this could easily reverse with different cds- i would think that (in theory -and , of course, not feasible) every person should have at least five different two-channel stereo systems - with each having different strengths".

I discovered this as well. Now only the likes of Suri and George with their huge palatial houses can afford this sort of luxury.

waiting for the views of the three stooges on the various systems tht they heard in Blr.Thoroughly enjoying this thread.
Hope to catch up with u guys next time u are in Blr and take you for some auditions in South Blr.

Paging/Calling Golden Ears,

You are hereby instructed to post your review of the 'bengaluru audio yatra' ASAP, failing which....

Agree with Denom,

Can you guys post your impressions (audio/music reproduction only) of the various systems heard with different genre of music ?

Thanks everyone who made this audio yatra possible. Good to read your impressions about various systems. There was a mention by suri and george of having 2/3 audio system. I am also planning that (in my limited budget) but not different sounding systems rather different flavours. like... (1) My old Pioneers System for Cassettes (2) Tube Radio and 78s for Tube sound (3) Turntable and vintage amp for Vinyls and (4) DIY for low budget Hi-fi system for Audio Cds.

I think AV lounge threads should not be having any problem if made visible on first page of the forum.

Yes otherwise, I'll land up in God's own country with my full monthly quota.:D

hi captrajesh -

Kannur is of great strategic military importance. It houses one of the 62 military cantonments in the country, the Kannur Cantonment, and is the current seat of the Defence Security Corps.

that being the case - hehehehe! - monthly quotas can be accessed !

hehehe Suri,

If am in Kannur, I'd prefer accessing Baltmore made famous by you.:D

The V-Tec engine screams like a banshee as Suri downshifts for the switchbacks. Sitting adjacent in the passenger seat, I brace myself for the body roll, but there is none, as the car holds its line through the corner without drama, firmly planted to the tarmac.:clapping: The suspension and the new Yokohama tires do their job well, while the wiper blades struggle with the typical Kerala downpour. Rallynut, ironically, in the backseat, mumbles, grumbles and does some more about queasiness but never mentions stopping. We are on a mission, an Audio Yatra, to listen to the best loudspeakers that Bangalore can offer, in search of awesomness in the hi fi world.:ohyeah:

Many more twisties and arrow straights later, we enter the choc a bloc traffic of Bangalore city and head over to our first stop for the day, Santhol2 aka Santhoshs residence. We meet Santhosh and Saikata and after the usual pleasantries, we make way quickly upstairs to the AV den.

Open Sesame- Door to Santhoshs theatre

Santhosh is a guy whos got the best of both worlds, a great audio as well as video set up. Just like hes got a mad hatter car as well as bike in his garage!
His audio set up comprises of:
Source: Marantz Cd63se, Squeezebox
Amp: Adcom Pre GFP 345 and Adcom power GFP 345
Speakers: B&W Dm610

Sultans of Swing-Dire Straits: Good excitement and slam but Mark Knopfler s voice was getting drowned amidst it all.

Taal se Taal mila-Taal OST: The sound of the water drop in the beginning was very clear and smooth. The very deep LF in the opening drum beats though not as deep as preferred , was still very impressive especially for standmounts without a subwoofer. The main problem was that the highs were quite harsh( a characteristic of this CD to an extent) with some sibilance with Alka Yagnik singing.

Saraswati-Into the Light: Again good detail level and separation, but the mandolin lacked body and sweet tone. The fast, high notes at the last 30 seconds of the track were a little bunched together, but the accompanying bass guitar had good texture.

Hotel California-Eagles: This particular song was played via the Logitech Squeezebox rather than the CDP. It sounded surprisingly good. The final applause as the track ends sounded very realistic.

Temptation-Diana Krall: The opening cymbal was immediate enough but once again the speakers were not bringing out Diana Kralls full bodied vocals. Vocal imaging could be obtained in a very narrow sweet spot only.

Overall, the speakers present detailed sound but could do with better mid range. I have to add that these standmounts delivered impressive bass, be it with the Chinese drums track from Marantz test disc as well as the Taal track.

We watched a few minutes of Avatar on Santhoshs video set up and I have to say I was very impressed by the Emotiva pre. The video from the Ps3 through the Optoma hd20 was also fantastic.
P.s I got to watch some more of the movie later that night, as I crashed at Santhoshs place for that day. However my plan to ride his RD350 went down the drain because of limited time!

@all,i must add that at first,i was just stunned as to how well the room was done, and half expected someone outside the entrance selling popcorn:lol:!!.the pictures dont do it justice,we were trying to get some snaps of the HT room with its 'mood lighting',but my trusty kit lens just kept hunting due to lack of adequate light :p.here is a one man's personal multiplex/theatre,no wonder santhosh needs to be dragged outta there so that he may be reminded what the outside world looks like!!!heh.very good experience indeed for me,can only imagine the time involved, the pain and dedication it must have needed to get it to where it is.kudos santhosh,i'd gladly get a ticket for a show at ur place, anytime:D!!cheers

p.s:the camera was mine, but all credit to iaudio, who has a very keen, photographers eye.

After checking in to our accommodation, the pack continued with the addition of Stevieboy to Sivas place. We reached there to find a beautiful house with an even more beautiful audio set up . Siva and Jeya arranged a sumptuous dinner for us at short notice and made us very comfortable in the listening room. Siva was gracious enough to let me handle the cdp myself(We know how obsessed, possessive we are all about our audio equipment!)

Scanspeak based Speakers with mid and Hf unit on top, LF unit at bottom with PR

Taal se Taal Mila-Taal: The Tabla sounded identical to the way it sounded on Suris . But I missed the deep and low opening drum beat here. There is a faint rhythmic tapping sound present in this track coming from the right channel. Funny thing was here it was coming from the left channel and I pointed out the same to Suri.
Note: Siva informed me the following day that the channels had been inverted and things may have sounded a little weird. Made sense.

Sultans of Swing-Dire Straits: This song didnt have the excitement I am used to, when played on the AP set up. The laid back character of the set up meant that the song was delivered in a very reserved, gentlemanly manner.
Temptation-Diana Krall: Diana Krall s voice came through with full vigour and sensuousness. A very large soundstage similar to the one experienced with Suris Scanspeak based set up. However the rawness of the cymbal at the beginning of the track wasnt felt here.

Raag Baageshri-Raashid Khan: this was one was fantastic. Its a well recorded Hindustani vocal based track. The start stop of each note, the clearing of the throat all were rendered with fantastic detail. It was like holding a sonic microscope( sounds stupid, but you get the point right?) to Raashid Khans throat. The background was very dark and the accompanying instruments sounded very natural for ex. The bass of the tabla.

Dhan Dhan Dhart-Rajneeti OST: This is a song by Sonu Nigam from the movie Rajneeti. Sonu Nigams croons in full vigor, passion and patriotism. The vocals came through very well, however the tension/mood set by the underlying synth bass and powerful drums was not upto the mark.

Mars the bringer of War-Gustav Holst, Planets: This is a complex track and as is obvious from the title it attempts to recreate the ambience of an advancing battle troop. And I have to say the system did this with conviction. Siva upped the gain on this particular track and the massive scale and power of the track was rendered very well.

Michael Shriever- Drums track: This track demands a level of aggression which the system didnt deliver IMHO. There is a part where there is a startling crash of the drum sticks after a silence. It sounded muted here.

Saraswati-Into the light: This is one area where the Scanspeak typically shines, the ability to render the high pitched, fast mandolin notes with unfailing resolution and this was no exception.

Hiten, true, it seems like all systems have their pros and cons, and you need more than one to actually get the best out of your music.
I wish the thread did show up on main page, have to dig it up each time to post!

Denom, I was the only music cum Video buff so couldnt spend much time with video set up at Santhoshs. But gotta say, its awesome. Clarity is amazing, surround effects et al.
