Interesting-Stereophile's best of year

Hi,

This is one project I would love to do.

DIY Tannoy Westminster Royal - diyaudio.rs

Westminsters et al - AudioKarma.org Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums

The Monitor Golds are crying out for something like this.

I have realized that horns are my thing ! In any form or size !

True.Once you hear a good horn loudspeaker there is no going back to regular speakers.

Arj,the Jadis Eurythmie and Yamamura speakers are something that I would love to listen to.

If you want to DIY the Jadis these links should be of interest to you.

BTW these drivers are getting favourable comments from quite a few people including Nelson Pass. Not very expensive either.

Hi Rajiv ji,

Thanx for the Rulitt speaker mention in the forum and you do not need the permission to upload images of my drivers.you can go ahead and upload the image of my drivers. Now the drivers are broken in and i do not have any harshness in sound it is very musical voicing is very good and anybody who ever wants to hear these drivers can pm me and is free to come and hear these Rulitt drivers.i feel the sound i wanted i have got it now and in future i am also thinking of going for Field Coils.
I think so in this month i will get even the baffle ready

They sure do look good! Wonder how it sounds for the 30 grand you pay!

For the Voxative range of drivers meant for DIYer,s prices are quite less, Voxative even have genuine sale sometime back i had received the mail informing me of sale prices at their german showroom

Thanks for the generous offer, must make a trip to Bombay, hopefully sooner than later to see and listen to these speakers. I had read the 6moons review, found it interesting

Hi Arj,

The first thing is that front loaded horns like the Gran Gioia need a large room .You have to be at least 15 feet away for the sound to really come together. In smaller rooms it is better to use a bass reflex/rearhorn/sealed cabinet with a horn for the HF.

The Gran Gioia is a modern beautiful version of the Altec VOTT.Basically an Altec derived 416/515 woofer and an Altec 288 type HF driver in a front loaded horn with bass reflex cabinet to extend the lows.

I understand that the Gran Gioia uses drivers sourced from Wolf Van Langa's Kilmanjaro series.

Blumenhofer Acoustics News: We introduce the Gran Gioia

Blumenhofer-Acoustics | Kilimanjaro-Series | Wolf von Langa

Great Plains Audio | Great Vintage Loudspeakers

Wolf gets Altec reproductions from Great Plains Audio and converts them to field coils. The old Alnico drivers can be easily converted to field coils. In fact there is a guy in B'lore who can do this. One of the last of a vanishing tribe of great speaker repair guys.

Interesting field coil drivers in Germany

Actually putting togther a good horn system using vintage drivers is not very expensive compared to the cost of some bookshelf speakers. A speaker similar to the Garan GIOIA can be put together for a fraction of its cost using Altec drivers (Alnico not field coil).

One has to be patient to get the right drivers in India,or if one is in a hurry and has $$ good drivers can be bought on Ebay.It is next to impossible to find vintage field coils now in India, even if you find them parts are not available.

It is best to stick with Altec/JBL as replacement parts are easily available.Finding parts for Klangfilm,Vitavox ,Jensen,Western Electric is next to impossible or you have to pay $$$$ for them.

Unless you buy new field coil speakers trying to repair/restore old drivers is very difficult.Sourcing the correct parts and cost of the parts is a problem.I have some drivers that will hopefully get done sometime in the future.

New field coils are very expensive. There is a Chinese comany apparently funded by the Japanese that is making replicas of the great vintage field coils. Prices are supposedly reasonable compared to the prices of the same vintage drives The reports about their performance are good.

Anil has a pair of Altec based speakers. If he is willing you could take your Leben across and listen to them, and see if the sound is to your liking before you take the plunge.Tubes +Altecs :yahoo:

Rajiv Ji,
I had discussion with chopper,as per his experience, new GPA drivers is ,that these drivers are inconsistent in sound, and prefers going for vintage altec drivers.
Regarding LM audio drivers some famous names in audio like pitchperfectaudio in US and auditorium in germany are marketing these drivers and price wise they are comparable to Rulitt drivers ,so i think so i would like to compare these two Atelier Rulitt and LM audio field coils .

I even read a praise from audioGuru Mr Pass for L CIAO FR alinico chinese drivers, and these are not even expensive @USD360 in Hong Kong

I am already inviting myself for a listen whenever it's ready:) I am fascinated by the concept of open baffles and single drivers (not necessarily together) and would love to hear a good implementation, especially with a fancy driver like your's. I have only heard a single driver (Rethm Saadhana, which is - strictly speaking - not a single driver as it has active subwoofers nicely hidden in its bowel) and I was deeply fascinated by the sound.

Hi,

The speaker which started this thread was recently auditioned by me and Santhosh at the Singapore Hifi show 2011.

Abhi, your listening impressions on the Voxative speakers please.

Regards
Rajiv

This speaker may not be available for DIY but is currently the talk of the town:
