Just a few weeks back I got the Marantz Sr4003 receiver coupled with the Quad11L2 and the DVD Player is by Philips 3356 (mass market DVDp)

The thing is I have noticed that till a few days back -15 output volume was loud enough, but now it seems that have to go till -8 or -5 at times for the same loudness with the same music. This is kinda strange. Not just me, but my dad also feels the same.

Is this behavior normal ? Is this one of the consequences of break-in (not sure when does one actually know the device has been broken-in) ?

not normal
are you playing the same song? same recording
check bass,trebleand balance settings
There is sometimes also a fature called "loudness" or Gain check those values as well

Alcy - check if you have one or the other DSP modes engaged? When I had my Marantz I preferred using Pure Direct more than the other DSP modes. But this grew with time.

It could also be that you had a DSP mode engaged in the past and now you dont have that engaged - hence the perceived decrease in overall volume.

Thanks magma & thevortex.

I have been listening to the same mode, songs, and bass/treble settings with the same input(coaxial). I guess that makes it a cause for worry ? I will talk to the dealer if you folks advise so.

Also, I have been listening to the Stereo Mode all the way. I did try Pure DIrect sometime but that was in the initial days only.

Break in has nothing to do with loudness. Re-check you connections, cycle through the DSP settings and also make sure its the same song.

-8/-5 is actually very loud figure under normal circumstances and could cause ear damage on extended auditions if your amp was working correctly.

Well, -15 is enjoyable with careful listening. -10 is comfortable. -5 due to current circumstances only.

Anyway, I will observe the situation for the coming week, and see if its just my ears !

May be your ears are just getting used to the volume level. It happens to me too. Initially it will seem very loud. Gradually I have to keep on increasing the volume after some listening on a new system.

And that's not only for stereo systems. When I was newly married, even a whisper from my wife was audible! But then now, I hear her only when she literally shouts into my ear:D Possibly because she has become a "old system" now?!:ohyeah::ohyeah:

this was because that lovely luscious thing was whispering those things that gladdened your ears!!

and - now - this is because you do not like the things that she says!

NOT SO IN AUDIO SYSTEMS - they age well with time!:)

Thank you kdlsrinu. The "wife comparison" thought just occurred to me as soon as I read the post by vea!

alcy, apologies for hijacking your thread!

"thekinge" Exccllent words quoted by you. really enjoyed your quotation.nice humar.
reg the problem.some times the preamp gain control causes the problem. pls check if it had power amp direct button, connect with other preamp and comes to justification.

Hi, please do check if the speaker connections are alright...and also if the incoming power supply is consistent in your area.

cheers

Alright folks, I need to confess here that there's nothing wrong with the equipment.

Need to see some specialist, soon. Not kidding really.

I don't know but this has been happening for over an year now...every now and then. Suddenly in my right ear, I hear a hissing sound...the ones you hear when a big bomb explodes (like in the movies) and there's a high treble hiss. Only for a few seconds.

Also, when I am listening to music or watching a movie, I always feel that I can't hear the sound properly from the right...so I keep adjusting my position until of course I psychologically convince myself that the room acoustics are to be blamed !

This link says I am probably gonna be deaf...The Noise in Your Ears: Facts About Tinnitus

I wonder if this ear problem is gonna get worse. Anyway, I am back to hearing good music at -18 to -15 range...so as of now no problems.
