Is UPS a must for projectors ? I am talking to a home theater specialist and he tells me a stabilizer would not cut and that a UPS is necessary to prevent any damage to the lens. Is this correct ?

Thanks

It is the frequent power switching in and switching out which could potentially damage the projector circuits. Again, no one has concrete proof that this happens. Since projector is a very expensive of equipment, spending a little to protect it is advisable. The same goes for your AV receiver and a stabilizer for your subwoofer.

I do plan to have a stabilizer set up before all of these..i was just wondering if i need to do a Stabilizer or a UPS.

I have my projector on my home inverter. Gives me enough time to switch it off.

Not sure how the lens would be damaged by a power outage.

Most projectors (with bulbs) require that at the time of powering off, the bulb has to cool down. In fact the fan powers up to a higher rev. level when power off is activated. So during power outage situation the projector shuts off without cooling and if this happens repeatedly the bulb can get damaged and perhaps even explode. Hence an UPS is recommended. Whether it is mandatory depends upon how well your projector can handle shutting off without cooling.

I think you should be deciding on the usability / purpose, if its for protecting the equipment with the huge current variations / fluctuation in your location, then stick to Stabilizer. All it will do is keep it's output at a stable voltage.

UPS - Main purpose is to continue to supply power when the mains power has failed using a battery back up. Not all UPS come with inbuilt voltage stabilizer, The once with inbuilt stabilizer / Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) are bit on the expensive side. However the benefit you get there is power backup + voltage stabilizer.

So choice is your, do you need only Stabilizer or power backup + voltage stabilizer. Hope that helps in clarifying your

Good Insight

If it is for the sake of the bulb then does it mean it is not as important for LCD / LED ?

Thanks

LCD's have bulbs and so does DLP. I dont know about LED.

I had a Chinese led projector and although the manual did not mention any cool off time, it used to get hot and I used to leave it to cool off before packing it away.

My current Dell does have a cool off time of around a minute when the fan keeps running.

Hi,
The Voltage stabilizer will stabilize your mains power and provide a constant 230V output and will not modify the sine wave from the mains supply. If the power goes, it is like pulling out the plug, but without voltage spike or drop. So I feel the equipment remains protected.

The UPS will give you the added advantage of manually shutting off the equipment, which is useful either if you have a computer connected where it is safer to close the running applications, or you want to finish watching the movie or song before shutting off. Otherwise, the UPS will not offer any added protection. However, if you do decide on a UPS, make sure it is an online UPS and not a simple inverter. The online UPS is constantly converting your AC into DC and back again into stabilized AC with a constant voltage. An inverter, on the other hand, takes over only when the mains power goes off, and does not provide a perfect sine wave, notwithstanding the claims of the manufacturer. This can damage equipment and is the reason why some warranties are rendered void if the equipment is used with an inverter or offline UPS.

Best wishes

If you are facing frequent power cuts, then it would be advisable to go in for a pure sine wave ups. APC's online ups is a good choice, and you wouldnt need to add a stabiliser in this case, as it provides constant output voltage; but it can be a bit expensive. I was using a mahindra powerol pure sine wave ups earlier, and it served me well.

I am using APCs 1KV UPS for my PJ, and it is handling the job well. I will advise the same to you as well

LED projectors can be switched ON/OFf instantly but projectors with lamps would be affected if not properly switched OFF.

Offline and Line interactive UPS from APC are not advisable as they are traditionally not sine wave. I am not sure if Online models do offer pure sine wave from APC.

A pure sine wave Home UPS/Inverter can also do the job like in my home.

And yes, a power backup is highly recommended as an OHP lamp can fail if not gracefully cooled down or warmed up during normal usage.

I have a Viewsonic pro8200 and it was always on ups on whatever the very few hours I had used. One day the ups was on the fritz and I connected directly to mains for the first and last time. Power went out and when it came back the projector was gone. So from personal experience I would say go for ups.
