Hi everyone

I have bought LG JAZZ LCD TV (32LG80FR)

Can someone help me with the video file formats that can be played through USB.

I know its divx but I downloaded a high definition video from DIVX official site and tried to play it on TV but it shows "File not supported".
I get this error for many files.

Here is file information of files that played and not played:

Played file 1

Played file 2

Not Played

It appears that the resolution is playing part in this thing. Any help is appreciated. :)

Regards
lgjazz

Thanks spirovious

I also thought so.

Do you downscale HD videos to watch on DVD player / LCD TV

If yes then which s/w do you use to do so?

Thanks again.

Thanks spirovious

But I dont need to play it on my CRT as I have already bought an LCD TV.
And I think I have paid enough that it should play HD through USB. But I think it supports 720p through USB and the videos that did not play(image shared above) were higher than this resolution.

So I am now looking to get around the problem by some trick.

May be someone who has tried out video formats/resolutions on an LCD through USB can share some knowledge on this subject.

Let us see if some one with LG Jazz or similar product situation has a solution.

Thanks again spirovious

well eventhough your LCD is HD,hardware used to play within the LCD is not that superior to play high res.Divx.Even Divx has newer codecs which may not be present on LCD.
So my point to make you read was HTPC/Laptop is best way to play HD files.

OR other opt is to convert files to lower format as suggested by others.

Use "Total Video Converter" to change any video format to any other format/change the resolution to higher/lower.

I change hi-res vids to 720x576 resolution to watch on my LG PQ60 USB.

For a free software that does the same thing, try WinX Video Converter 4.0

I haven't used this, so can't say how good it is.

Thanks for the info WHATSINANAME, appreciate it

I tried to convert a video from Hi-Res to Low-Res using TVC but it did not work i.e. vid didnt play on LCD.
Do we have to just change the resolution or something else too.
Also which format do u convert to. Please see the image below.

I read somewhere that the hardware is capable of playing the files. Its just that the company doesnt want us to use it yet. Maybe in future models we would see it.

The codecs thing might be true but its a recent model so the codecs on it might not be that old. Also I have heard that the LG engineers can upgrade the codecs using USB.

Try these settings :

Convert to divx mpeg4
View attachment 986

Then go into settings
View attachment 987

Once there, in the video options reduce the frame rate and bit rate
View attachment 988

then resize the video
View attachment 989

Now convert the file with these settings and it should play. These are the minimum settings I have given, you can of course, later experiment with the settings and see which is the best quality that plays on your USB drive and use that. You can also use the settings of the files that played (in your first post) instead of the ones I have given, and use those.

The quality will naturally be lower than your original video, so if you're going to watch a good movie that you've been looking forward to, it's not worth it, better to burn it on DVD and watch it that way.

Thanks for the quick reply WHATSINANAME

I did try the settings and the video did play and the picture quality was good but the video didnt cover the entire screen. Black space on the left and right of the video.

Does this happen with you also?

No. Did you convert it to 16:9 ratio? (see the last pic of my above post, the bottom red circle)

Also make sure your TV is set to 16:9.

Thanks for your efforts WHATSINANAME

Yes, I did as you suggested and also the TV is set to 16:9.

When I change the aspect ratio to 4:3 I am able to see the black space clearly.

It appears as if we have taken a huge drawing board and drawing only at the center leaving the sides blank.

Also I searched for 720p(720p - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).
It states the following:
720p has a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, a vertical resolution of 720 pixels and a horizontal resolution of 1280 pixels, or 1280x720, for a total of 921,600 pixels.

So I converted a video to 1280x720 res and tried to play it on LCD.
Got the error "File Not Supported".

LCD MANUAL states:
Movie files are supported as follows.
Resolution : under 720x480(720x576) WxH pixels.
Frame rate : under 30 frames/sec
Video Codec : MP 43, DIVX_3_11, DIVX_4_12, DIVX_5_0, XVID, MP4S, RMP4, MP4V, _3IVX.

But while advertising they say USB plays 720p. Damn these ppl

Any ways need to solve the blank space issue so that I can enjoy atleast some VIDS on the LCD.

Ok, there is only one more thing I can think of right now. When you have started playing your film from the USB drive, press the 'Option' button on your LG TV remote. (On my TV it is the red button as shown)

View attachment 992

A menu comes up and the top option is 'full screen' or 'original size.' If it is set to original size change it to full screen and see. That could be the problem.

Thanks WHATSINANAME for all the suggestions provided. Really appreciate the efforts. Reputation added.

For me the options button does not work while playing through USB.

I have attached few images so that you have the clear picture.
In the 1st image the white boxes is the blank space of the screen.
2nd image shows the 16:9 aspect ration has been set.
3rd image is the snap of my LCD remote.

I will update this topic if there is any positive progress.

Hmm... try converting to other sizes, like 720x480. Experiment with small video files, so you don't waste too much time converting and then find it doesn't play.

I'm sure with trail and error you will get the right settings.

Hi lgjazz, If you havent tried it out till now..
883x480 works perfectly full screen..
Iam ripping my hidef files with that resolution and it works like a charm in my PQ60.

Hope it helps.

Edit: If the oroginal file is huge, use 720x392.

Thanks WHATSINANAME and BLASTO

Appreciate it.

@BLASTO
Whatever goes above 720X* it wont play.

@WHATSINANAME
Sorry for the late.... reply.

@WHATSINANAME and BLASTO
I got frustrated by the video not supported error and bought XTreamer.
Now I am using it to play the Hi-Def files.

Happy holidays!!

I got the Apple TV which plays upto 1080i. But it plays only H264 MP4 format, so u may need to convert your videos to mp4 or use Handbrake to rip DVDs in Apple TV format. Produces great quality video though. That is my only HD source as of now for my LG 32.
