My guess is that this will get hijacked by the Arduino, 3-D printing, quadcopter, Lego mindstorms and robot-wars crowd - i.e. the wanna-be kit-building "makers", rather than real innovative designers. However, it's still better than not having it at all.
(I'm not averse to building kits myself - it's largely a matter of convenience, and lots of innovative effort goes into engineering some very useful kits, e.g. IKEA flat-packed furniture. It would take years of work and lots of investment to be able to produce even one of those from scratch.)
