Marantz CD6003 or CD5004

Had been to Cinebels today.They had the CD6003 on display retailing at 24K. The salesman informed me that the new CD5004 is also in stock and costs the same.

Since the 6003 is the higher end model of the previous line, is it a better choice? The salesman kept telling me to go in for the 5004 as it is the new model and has 'better components hence better sound quality'

Opinions anyone?

Anyday the 600x series wd be better than the 500x series. Go for the 6003, .. The salesman calling the 5004 a good model, is just a marketing gimmick..

Why don't you ask the salesman to connect both the models and then you yourself can hear and compare them ?

Buy the one that sounds good to you regardless of what the salesman says.

CD6003 has been discontinued now & its replacement model is the CD6004.

CD5004 is available for 17500/- via group buy on the forum.

I did a search for this on the net and found quite a few people (apart from a forum member) experiencing Sub Q error problem with the cd6003. looks like I'll skip the 6003 and go in for the 5004 or 6004

Skip both and go for Musical Fidelity M1 DAC.
Divakar had a Cd5004 and sees night and day difference when moved to M1.

Very true. The M1 DAC made the biggest improvement in my audio system, more so than my new amplifier. If you already have a CDP, I would suggest auditioning the M1 or even the VDAC before upgrading your CDP.

A good DAC would surely improve upon the CDP; my AP DAC seriously improves the SQ of my Marantz CD6003.

I am using a Marantz CD5001. That's probably the last component in the chain that will get upgraded. And I will replace it with a pure transport CDT.

CD 6003 is higher end model but discontinued for unknown reasons. CD 5004 is arond 16.5 k and is a older version. Latest I heard is CD 6004.DAC in CD 6003 is superior to that of CD 5004.

I've bought the CD6003 from the forum group-buy and have good experience with it. Especially it enables me to connect iPod/USB for conveniance. I've never faced any problem while playing Audio CD, It's build quality is superb and I feel proud to possess this thing ...BUT I couldn't notice much difference in SQ to my existing setup. (May be my setup needs some kind of tweaking.. I'm not sure how to do that.)

Yes you guessed it right. Unfortunately it is not their mainstream product and was a prototype made during a phase when they were toying with ideas as to which chip to make use of before they finalised their current DAC.

Thanks a lot @CAPTRAJESH for quick and brief description. Is it the "Acoustic Portrait NOS DAC" that has dual TDA1541 chips & dual EC88CC tubes in output stage? you mentioned in one more thread. I tried to find it on Acoustic Portrait website but sadly it's under-construction...
