Since the SR7009 is no where to find I decided to go with the older generation receiver. I narrowed down to SR7008 and NR929.

From the specs point of view, the only difference I see is the SubEQ on SR7008. Since I am not planning to use two subs this is a moot point for me.

I am getting a good deal on Onkyo.

Is there any good reason to spend more on Marantz?

Thanks.

Find out if either of them will work as a receiver if the HDMI dies.
I have a Marantz 5003 that is working after HDMI died. I have a onkyo TX SR 805 which quit when the hdmi died.
Cool.

Both are neck to neck and have very few differences ...Sub EQ features that you mentioned, # of HDMI output's....

Since you are getting a good deal, then Onkyo....But are you fine with overlooking Atmos in 7009?

marantz sr7008 has a MRP of $2000 and it sells now for $1600 and the Onkyo TX-NR1010 (which is a higher version than the one you have mentioned) has a MRP of $1800 and sells for $1000 now at amazon.
Marantz sells for relatively less money here in India.
Don't give much importance to the wattage mentioned by onkyo.
To my finding, Marantz has superior components and is more musical and refined.
Try to do a A/B audition if that option is available to you. Else, at least audition them both.

I was never too much into atmos as it requires additional speakers in ceiling and it doesn't suits my need. My main draw for 7009 was due to hdmi 2.0 for future proofing. But with 929 I am saving almost 50K compared to 7009. So it is making me rethink.

I am not sure of 1010 is a higher model than 929. The 1010 has only 7 channels, doesn't have 4k pass through, no WiFi bluetooth. In fact I am getting the 1010 even cheaper that 929.

I don't know if can do true A/B compare on both. Plus I don't know how they will sound with my Polk setup. So I have to depend on folks like you helping me out.

Onko TX-NR1010, a 7.2 AVR was released in 2012... Marantz SR 7008, a 9.2 AVR was released in 2013.. Similarly Onkyo TX NR 929, a 9.2 AVR was released during the same time....

Juz as a comparison between the Onkyo Vs Marantz SR, Onkyo 929 consumes 870 W of power for 9 channels, while Marantz consumes 710 W

Ok. Then fine.. 50K saving is huge....

1010 & 929 were released in different period.... I think 1010 uses 32 bit DAC's than 929...

929 was built from 818 model, they dropped the HQV Vida processor, added 2 more channels of amplification, few more features, to make it a stand-out in the market....

What speakers do you have from Polk ? take at-least Polk BS speakers to where Onkyo is, pair them up & listen to them for sometime.... This will give you rough idea of how they will sound than going blind fold without knowing how they would sound...

I have Polk R50/R30/R15/CS of the same family but don't recall the number now. R50's are quite big to carry around.

I do like the way they sound with my HK AVR 635.

Thanks

_Rahul.

If R50/R30/R15 are from the same family, then they should be timbre matched...If you can carry R15 BS along for a demo, it will give you a good idea of how that sounds....

Srinath.

Hope you buy used & faulty AVR's to experiment the internals... The reason i ask i because, i have seen you post in other threads where you have mentioned similar information...

I was not able to make my mind on whether to go for last year's models or wait for next generation with hdmi 2 ones.

The indecision laid me to delay the purchase for now.

I am going to wait for few months before I get back to it again. Anyways my HK avr is doing fine job for now.

Thanks a lot for all your help.

I have not heard a demo of the ONKYO TX-NR929 or the 1010 but from the reviews on the web it appears that the 1010, 3010 and the 5010 are considered better performers than the 828, 929 etc. Of the lot, the 5010 is considered reference grade, THX Ultra 2, as it has big multi stage transformer muscle for audio and video processing. The 3010 is also THX Ultra 2 certified but has EI transformer instead of the Torroidal one in the 5010. the Marantz AVRs are priced on par with ONKYO's reference lines. But I guess your ears are the best judges.
