Had the pleasure of Mazher and Jousha visit home for listen of Umesh Pradhan's TL FS speakers. Was amazed by Mahzers wisdom and knowledge about speaker placement and his sense of details. He could immediately point out if the left and right speakers were reverse connected and also at minute details with ease. He suggested and immediately moved out my speakers from the corner placement and placed it around 6 feet away from the back wall and also bring in depth and realism in the sound stage. Also Mazher tilted the speaker by adjusting the spikes for the sound stage to be in the front and asked me if the sound stage can be made a bit wider and little to the ear level.

The speaker placement transformed to the more cluttered mid-range and masking lows to a more balanced mid with the rest of the sound stage. After a while we discussed about some technical details and showed him certain simulation and measurement software. Also components used and other tools were discussed.

Jousha carried some test track and compared the SQ with the GR research speaker build and would like his comments about the same

It was a time well spend by all of us and enjoyed discussing some critical aspects about speaker placement and also advised me the way forward towards building high-end stuff. Have taken all the advise and will be implementing step by step in my next projects.

Would be happy to hear from Mazher about his comments.

Congrats! Nice looking speakers!

What drivers are you using for these?
BTW, since this is a TL design, where are the ports in the cabinet?

Best,
APK

Thanks, Peerless Drivers, Terminus at the bottom between the spikes.

Hari, what are the speaker "legs" you have under the plinth?

Have you thought of speaker spikes. My experience has been very good with steel spikes. Do consider experimenting with steel spikes if you haven't done so already. Huge effect on the sound stage and imaging.

These are steel studs which can be adjusted 0.5" either side for balancing. Spikes with flat bottom is more preferred than just pointed spikes to prevent floor damage while moving the speakers around.

Yes, Joshua & I were invited to Thana to visit Hari's place to listen to his speakers;
It was a bit far for me - but since it was a Saturday & there was no office I had decided to drive to his place. I reached his building by 1040 approx.
Hari was waiting for me & was most gracious in escorting me to his house.

The Floor Stander was set up in his living room - Marantz CD Player & Sony Amplifier - Teflon coated Speaker wire was used to connect the TL Speakers - did listen to them on Amp Nuts CD - I know all those tracks well since they are the 'usual suspects' & most were given by me to DC - long long time back....

I had taken the original cd's with me in my pouch, but I never got around to using it - the CDR was sufficient.

We heard music for a while - then I requested if I could 'touch' the speakers & Hari 'approved' so I wanted to move the speakers - however the speaker cable was really 'short' & therefore we changed the Teflon Cables to some other cable & the speaker was moved.

Then Joshua arrived;
He heard for a while.
He too had got a Test CD with him [left it back with Hari when he left]

Later we changed the speaker - connected the Book Shelf on a 'make do' stand.

Did some more listening;

Had a Slice / Banana Wafers etc.

Then took a few pics - this is Hari with his 'speakers'

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Discussed Loudspeakers / X-Overs etc.
Saw some of the components that Hari has & puts into his speakers.
I did offer some suggestions - hope they were taken in the right 'spirit'

All in all it was a nice Saturday spent in Thana.

I want to wish Hari all the best in his efforts.
I am sure he shall do very very well...

Will write more in a bit...

Audio Cables - Spectra Connectronics Pvt. Ltd

Visit this store & buy the Speaker Cables - Made in Taiwan & they are super VFM Products.
Use this to make your speaker connections - better than what you are using currently....

Just for your kind info;

Some of the BEST X-OVER Parts are made by this company :-

Duelund Cast PIO Speaker Film Capacitor

They also make the 'as good as can get' resistors etc.

resistors_duelund

DUELUND Premium-CAST Resistors
This is on the top of the ladder - used by some of the best speaker makers in the world

These are pics of where the Duelund from Denmark is used in X-Overs;

This is the back of a speaker where a part of the x-over is 'exposed' cause Duelund is like the R & R [car] of Audio Components - no one comes close to it;

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Therefore it is 'exposed'

These are the kind of speaker cables you can get in Mumbai - if you do not know where - just give me a shout on a Saturday & I will take you there;
I am not in the country all of May - so this Saturday or then in June [sorry]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

These are on the same lines as Kimber 4 TC & 8 TC - but made in China / Taiwan and are very well priced...

You can also buy things like this & make the cable look good;

It makes the final product look good & really presentable.

Just look around & find good components & parts - your speaker will really very good.
Just look at the Cadence speakers - how they are made / parts that they use / finish that they achieve etc.

One of the simplest & most musical TL speakers I ever heard;

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

ALR Jordan Driver based TL Speaker - I heard it way back in 2003 in Frankfurt @ High End Show - I think - still have the pics somewhere - will have to find it..

Will not be expensive to make & there are not many x-over parts. It is a single driver loud speaker...

It was a pleasure meeting up with Hari after a long gap. In the interim (two Mumbai Meets ago), the quality of the finishing of his speakers have improved by leaps and bounds.

As mentioned in previous posts, Bhagwan had already re-positioned the floor standing speakers to give a substantial gap between the speakers and the front wall (I think about 5 feet).

The moment I entered the house, I was greeted by pleasant sounding music. It was straight away obvious that the sound emanating from the speakers was quite coherent, typical of good two-way designs. There was also clear demarcation of voices in the lateral space (left-right) as well as in depth (front-back).

Due to the fact that the tweeters are placed below the woofers, the height of the soundstage is a bit low. This probably can be rectified by raising the speakers by 5-6 inches, or lowering one's seat. But I must say this is hardly a deal breaker.

Also, the speaker placement is a trade-off - place it close to front wall for bass reinforcement and lose out on soundstaging and detailing, and vice versa. At 5-6 feet away from the front wall, bass was on the lower side, and folks used to listening to higher bass may want more. On the other hand, very few owners are ever likely to give it so much breathing room. Personally for my taste, the bass weight was adequate.

This electronics and cabling did not do enough justice to the speakers. With better source, amplification and cabling, the sound WILL improve substantially.

All in all a very fine design by someone who is a great speaker enthusiast.

Also, the sound signature was very familiar sounding for me since Hari's speakers use Peerless drivers like my DIY GRR bookshelves. Though the cabs are of different designs, they sounded very similar.

Thanks, Hari for having us over.

The pics on Page 1, was it after re-positioning of the 'floorstanding' speakers?

:eek:

No Sir;

These are older pics;
The speaker was placed along the 'length' of the room - about 6 to 9 inches from the rear wall when I arrived.

It was later I took them into the room around 5 feet from rear wall & also took them wider - about 7 + feet [tweeter to tweeter]
Also changed the tilt on the speaker.

Unfortunately, I did not take any pics of the speaker in that position...Sorry.

:sad:

I am planning to restore your placement today as it has a wider sound stage than the current one and adds more depth and realism to the sound stage. Will take snaps and post them too probably afternoon.

Good Idea;
Also change the Speaker Wire.
Use the thin Teflon Coated Cable & cut them to be 3M + long on either side. This is important.
Place the speaker with enough cable slack - so that there is enough chance to move the speakers around; just my humble suggestion...

Thanks for all your suggestion and advise. Will try and implement all of them during the weekend with the teflon cables.

The images with the placement suggested by Mazher and the best speaker placement in my room till date.

I remember seeing pics of similar speaker placement for yet another transmission line speaker with a rounded top in some other thread in this Forum. Only difference was, initially it did not have any 'angle' in the pics, but later it was given a slight tilt.

Yes you are right on the dot. That speakers were too designed by me and it belongs to FM Avidarthy at New Delhi and is also a TL FS.
