I like Nelly Furtado.
Since I am unable to browse for artists that much, I am unable to find one that has a similar style.
Such a pathetic collection of Music CD shops in my city Lucknow.
Please suggest an artist that has a similar style.
What I like is the philosophical lyrics, folk/different kind of beats and generally musical.
Not too offbeat.

Thanks in advance.

Can you give more examples of artists and even better, specific songs that you like?
Nelly Furtado is fairly experimental and different and it is difficult to understand your true preference from this artist alone.

Regarding Nelly I like her songs:
- Im Like a bird
- Powerless
- Forca
- All good things come to an end
- Crazy
- even her simple party song 'Night is young' sounds so good from her voice

I am just asking for loose suggestions for artists with similar qualities I described. Any that come to your mind will do.
My music preferences are ... well, dependent on my mood.
Sometimes I listen to Blink 182 ... trash compared to this mood !!!

Lucinda Williams - "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" - (Mercury - # 5583382)

....you're welcome,,!

I personally find Amy Winehouse too dark, but love Bonnie Raitt.

I'd also recommend checking out Adele, Stevie Nicks (and Fleetwood Mac of course) as well as Annie Lennox.

For purely female R&B I recommend - Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Sade, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Toni Braxton, Ashanti, and Lauryn Hill.

PS - I also highly recommend checking out related videos on YT. Have discovered many new acts that way.

Is this thread only for female vocalists ?

Check out : Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

BTW Essarr : try Brandi Carlile's " The Story" - a far stronger /better album...than any of her other work( IMO)

I'm afraid that I live in the age of Nellie the Elephant rather than Nellie Furtado, of whom I never heard before. If she sings as good as she looks, then it must be good! :o Will turn to YouTube, in the night, to find out.

My contribution, not quite from a former age, as I think she is still writing, performing and looking amazing considering that she must be older than I am, would be Joni Mitchell. She probably gets my nomination for female philosophical writer/singer of all time. Whoa! She's a whole decade older than I am!

Do you like Mumford and sons? Songs like
I will wait
Little lion man
The cave

Do you also like Bon Iver? Songs like
Holocene
Skinny love
For emma

If you want to discover 'similar' albums, go to www.allmusic.com review of that particular album and head to 'Similar Albums' link on that page. Not totally accurate, but a good starting point. Then head straight to YouTube to hear these artists.

Mumford is Brit folk with a tinge of American blue grass and country. Mind you, they're loud.

Bon Iver is far out indie American folk. One has to be able to forgive his falsetto and less than stellar overdubs. But he's definitely engaging.

Personally I listen to both, and find both very listenable.

If you happen to like Mumford, try The Decemberists too.

A great suggestion! Allmusic reminds me of back in the day when I used to do coding for a music website. Allmusic or allmusicguide or amg as it used to be called used yo be our reference benchmark on quality content and in depth coverage of music. Even rolling stones etc paled in comparison.

Another good way is to create a nelly furtado channel in Pandora and see what else it suggests. Since Pandora also learns from our feedback of likes and dislikes, it sometimes becomes very accurate in suggesting other similar artists and songs. All this can be done online from Pandora's website too. One doesn't need an internet radio device.

There are many many bands that are tryingto fuse folk with other genres or sound similar. I quite like Jose Gonzales too.
Check out Heartbeat
And his cover of Teardrop

Now this Club style song with its ambience might not be to Thad's liking. :-)

Instead this old world style singing plus the song with its lyrics might make him want to give her a chance ... Nelly Furtado - Crazy

Cheers !

Interesting. Probably not my cup of tea, but I enjoyed the first one more. Why? No, not because of the musical style, but because of the way the lyrics worked.

Here's another up-to-date lady: Kate Nash. Try this. It's sweet, romantic, and might bring a tear to your eye, but if in the mood for something less happy and more hard hitting, try this one. I don't know: does it work for anyone who never lived any where near Essex?

By the way... Jools Holland is a great guide to good music. Here's an old, sad song given a new take by Kirtsty Maccoll. And the Scots element would, I suppose, be because it would have been a New Year show. Edit: Oh, it's a Cole Porter song from 1934. Sorry, it is rather depressing!

I would second Thad's recommendation of Joni Mitchell, though I dare say she may be a bit too intense at first listen... persistence will be richly rewarded though.

Would also add Shawn Colvin - Whole new you / A few small repairs

I tried many suggestions. Thanks for all.

Fiona sounds too offbeat to me right now. Same for Beth Orton.
Yes Mumford were loud !
Amy Winehouse is dark.
Jennifer Warnes had an 80's commercial feel. But I liked the lyrics of "First we take Manhattan"

Corinne Bailey Rae looks promising.

Any song recommendation for Tony Braxton ?
