Guys I'm planning to buy a Sony LED TV which most probably may not play mkv or other formats so was wondering should I buy a Blu Ray Player which may play apart from Blu Ray disks also HD/Rips/Blu Ray rips available over the internet or with the Blu Ray Player I will have the limitations with respect to playing all formats using the USB drive. In that case I should invest on an addtional HD player which will play all formats?

Kindly advise.

Andy,

if you are not worried about 3d , there is a Dune HD max player for sale in for sale by owner section. Comes with full media player and bdp (region free) capabilities.

If you watch mostly of downloaded movies, then a media plyer is recommended. BR disks are still expensive and won't be able to play different file formats.

If you have a modern laptop PC with blu-ray and HDMI then you don't need anything more, just plug it into your TV. Only if you have an amp, speakers etc. etc. do you need a DVD player.

As you talked about .MKV format, I can assume you're also looking forward to play BluRay rips on your Sony LED TV with full capacity. (1080p resolution and 5.1 surround sound if you have a Home theatre system)
I had mentioned my set-up few days back when I got a problem and seeked help on this forum.
If you have a laptop with HDMI out, then below links may help you.
(just ignore the problems I mentioned and look for the set-up I tried.)

I recommend you use XBMC Media player (latest version 11.0 Eden). It's one of the coolest media player which is free, detects each and every audio/video codec and supports all kind of audio outputs (SPDIF, Optical, Analog, HDMI).

I totally agree with technobhatt, because this setup of using a laptop for blue ray CD viewing is cost effective in the respect that you dont have to buy a new blue ray player and then there is no hassle of formats as well.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
