I am in the process of setting up a dedicated HT room in my new apartment. The room size is 10 ' x 14 ' approx. Currently i have a Yamaha RX-V566 receiver with a 5.1 Klipsh satellite speakers and a powered Sub woofer. The SW and the receiver needs servicing and i am getting it done. Here is my dilemma.

When i move to the dedicated HT setup would my satellite speakers still be sufficient or should i look at book shelf / floor standing towers ?

Can i get away with setting up a 7.1 with my existing satellite speakers and get 2 floor standing towers and a center ?

What speakers would you recommend either which way bookshelf and Towers ?

Thanks in advance.

For this room you go with bookshelf and center speaker. Floor standingas speaker will be too big for your room and your AVR will not drive FS speakers to its true potential. Few performance proof available speakers, you can purchase them with blind eyes in order on my rank.
1. Monitor Audio Bronze 2 and Center
2.Wharfdale Diamond 225 & 220c
3.Dali Zenser 3 and Vokal
4. Polk RTiA 3 and CSiA 4.

Why do you say the AVR will not drive the tower to its full potential ? Is it just the AVR ? Should i be shopping of a new AVR if I go for the tower ?

If its just for movie watching, you can go with bookshelf speakers which will be good enough for the room size.
An nice sub is a must to enhance your movie watching experience.
You can have your AVR for now, and only upgrade to bookshelf speakers as fronts + Center channel. The satellites will be good enough to do the job of the surrounds. Then you can look at upgrading your AVR say Denon or Marantz and finally upgrade the sub (preferably 2 subs :) )

You already have sub, satellites should do...

Since you already have 5.1 speakers, consider spending money on 9.2 capable AVR and add ceiling/ height speakers..

if its loudness that youre worried about, the 5.1 satellite should perform well in a room that size. if its sound quality that youre after, then youre opening a whole new can of worms:)

10X14 room with 7.1 might get overwhelming. Setup the room with the existing system, and check what could be improved to really get the best out of it. If going for dedicated room, pay attention to room acoustics. some treatment goes a long way than just upgrading to bigger/better system.

For your room and AVR it's better to change front and center with quality bookshelf and center to enjoy music or movies to the fullest. Generally FS speakers needs huge for to perform well and need space to breath. Neither your room is big enough to breath nor your AVR have sufficient power to drive FS speakers. You require atleast one and half feet distance behind the FS speakers and your AVR is entry level which may not put out sufficient power and you will end up with burning of AVR. Still if you are looking for FS speakers then go for one which have highest sensitivity and which will draw less power from AVR or combine it with good quality active Subwoofer which can share the load of AVR..
Best option is change to bookshelf and Center or Change to latest powerful AVR.
