I had recently bought Onkyo 3500 and want to finally set this up mounting on walls. However I find that the wires which have come with the speakers are not long enough so I may have to purchase additional wire. So what brand of wire should I opt for? I know there is a thread already created about does quality of wire matter but wanted to check which one I should go for? And also can I use the existing cable and join it with the new cables will it effect the quality or is it better to go for the new cable completely keeping aside the existing one.

Kindly advise.

Andy,

Go for a fresh speaker wire if you can. You can go for a branded quality speaker cable with the following length to gauge recommendations:

Under 25 ft - 18 gauge (1.0 mm dia)
25 - 50 ft = 16 gauge (1.3mm dia)
50 - 100 ft = 14 gauge (1.6mm dia)
100 ft plus = 12 gauge (2.0 mm dia)

You can always user thicker wire (lower gauge) specially if your distance increases.

In another thread FM SEANDSILVA used single core earthing wire with very good results. Its also dirt cheap compared to fancy speaker wire so its really worth a try if you are upto it.

All the best!

The speakers of the s3500 will not benefit from high quality cables, any readily available cheap one you can purchase according to length should do for those satellites. It will probably be better than the ones which come with the onkyo itself.

You're probably right but the cost should be much less for the earthing wire keeping in mind he needs a decent amount of speaker wire for the surrounds.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Will try it out.
But now in one dilemna. I had got wiring done initially for my earlier Sony Home Theater setup with the flat pipes. Since this is a rented apartment we don't want to invest again on the wiring. I mean wiring done by electrician. For Concealed wiring he said it would cost 1.8k and for piping etc Rs 1,600. Any suggestions.

if you diy the wiring..not concealed....just lay and duct taping them going via edges...will save your money..but bad asthetics
the single core simple copper wire idea is great.....I will try that

8.29 & 8.51 meter is what the length is coming for both the ends for the speakers which we fix on the back where we sit.
Upon suggestion I checked about MX cable 16 guage which is costing Rs 65 per meter and 18 guage which is costing Rs 45 per meter. Which one should I go for?

Please suggest! Many suggested to go for 16 guage.

For the particular Onkyo HT setup, 18 Gauge is more than enough though ofcourse since the distance is wee bit more than 25feet you can opt for 16 Gauge wires as well.

There might be some who feel Wires improve the sound quality but I doubt anyone will say that for these cheap (but decent considering the price) Onkyo Speakers.

Had Bought MX 16 Guage 19 meter cable from MX Electronics.

Guys need a small help regarding a clarification. I bought around 19 Meters of wire however I'm falling short by some distance. Is it ok if we join the wires with the existing Onkyo Wires? By having join will it effect the quality etc? Later I plan to buy the additional wire and make a join. Will that be ok as well?

Please reply.

Yes you can join the cables and use. Not going to make much difference in SQ for an HTiB like Onkyo 3500.
