I want to renovate my McCormack TLC-1 with nice, shiny, gold-plated RCA sockets. I'll get an expert to do the soldering, but what should I buy?

Should be reasonable price, preferably India-available.

U can try MX.. I think for the price they are worth. I used to buy their RCA cables, and they always used to justify the price.

There is a showroom in chennai, which used to sell them for cheaper than online prices. But with shipping to your location if outside chennai makes it pointless. :)

Hi Nic,
FM Murli_N from Chennai once sent me Neutrick Gold plated RCAs.I have used it with my B1.They are heavy duty chassis mount RCAs.Cost was Rs 140/pair IIRC.
MX RCAs from Bibin's shop are also very good quality.

Regards,
Sachin

Hi Thad

Would go with sachu888 recommendation of Neutrik chassis mount RCA. If you wish to spend USD 30 then Vampire rca sockets are very good.

Guys, thank you!

It isn't just for looks (although I think it would be nice to have this classic box looking good, but the fit on some sockets is not as good as others.

There are 11 pairs: I would not be able to spend $30 each even if I wanted to. Buy Rs140 for something that comes with a well-known name would be fine: I could probably stretch to twice that! Or 360 for these MXs. Rs.1400 (Bajao) is getting a bit too much Next thing to do is realistically budget --- and also refer the matter to Mr Sayeed, to see if the hole size, dimensions, etc are going to be ok.

I had a quick browse yesterday and found some truly terrifying prices --- but that's the audiophile world, I suppose. Whatever next? Expensive wire?

Oh, wait...

BTW... it is the female sockets, for amplifier chassis use, that I'm looking for, not male plugs for cable termination.

I'd thought about replacing the sockets but then never bothered with it since audio quality was so good and why fix something that ain't broke. Please do not put MX or similar stuff - you might end up degrading audio quality. Change it to vampires if you can. Otherwise if I were you, I'd send a mail to Steve to check what to replace them with.

Thanks, RoC... you may be right that it's better to leave well alone --- and you should know.

e-mailing the creator himself? Yes, but the results could be expensive!

Hi Thad, Why do not you try polishing them (or you have) ?

Agree with ROC, don't mend, what is not broken.

Cheers.

Many low priced gold plated RCA's start loosing their coating if you plug in 10 to 15 times. It's better to use silver ( shiny ) RCA connectors which can be easily polished up every few months to keep the contact resistance at a minimum . Paying for the gold plated ones are not worth it unless you don't plug in/out too many times or if the plating thickness is significant.
'Gold looking' is not good enough ! You also end up paying a lot.
Well plated connectors are quite expensive and will not come for Rs200/- a pair ! Good nickel plated ones are also quite expensive but are very good.
I think the MX nickel plated ones are Rs100/- a pair. They should be pretty good. I have some and find no problems using them. In fact some MX 'Gold plated' ones 'tarnished' in storage . Was unused for over 1 year or so. Didn't waste time trying to find out why. I have a bunch of Jap and Taiwanese gold plated ones which after 10 years still retain their plating ! However they were quite expensive.
Buy a reputed brand for gold plated ones or just buy nickel plated ones.

cyber_cat and Fantastic...

No point in polishing them, as all the gold is gone and they are down to the brass[?] I put deoxIT, but that just makes them look cleaner. Brass does oxidise in the air.

I think that connecting and disconnecting 10-15 times would do me for years. The only reason to disconnect from the amp end is if I take it somewhere (which has happened, as I wanted to experience it in a "proper" hifi at capt rajesh's.).

This box is a classic, is ten years old at least, maybe more, and might have seen quite a lot of conection/disconnection in its life (which was with ReignOfChaos before me). It should also see a very long life ahead of it.

Hat's of to Mr McCormack. I wish I could afford his current offering ---about $20,000 . I know he is a believer in audiophile cables, and probably in audiophile connectors. OK, I am not, but I would not like to reduce the specification or performance of this box, but I suspect that me might be in favour of $00 parts! Of course, I could ask.

(They look lovely on the inside, where the gold is still there (Hmmm, got some pics somewhere) which is, I suppose, what got me thinking about this)

Alright, so the only solution now is replacement.

Do post your observations about your pre and post change on sound quality.

All the best.

Well, I will if and when I complete the project, ,and if and when I notice a difference, but, much as I hate the "Your system simply isn't resolving enough" line, it is a fact that this classic, once Stereophile-A-list box is connected to some comparatively modest equipment.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
