New Saadhanas on order

Wow mpw, you write well. First time I am hearing terms like un complicate and mirror used when describing a speaker

Maybe next time I should add a live dance to further the bar atmosphere. What say?
Let me know in advance when you do that :)

prem,

the following lines are the conclusion to a review on stereophile mag.... seems i am not the only guy feeling like sitting in a bar with Gold Flake rings around me.

"I fantasized sitting in a dark South Indian bar: A man in the corner is playing a shruti box. Idly dreaming, I'm smoking Gold Flake Kings and drinking Bombay gin. Wood ceiling fans are barely moving the dense air. The tala are dancing wildly and my mind is tracking them perfectly"

:):)

do let us know how the saadhanas are shaping up...and continue this thread.

sorry... if i went a touch off track here... couldnt resist this post...:D

regards
mpw

I was lucky to get some time with Prem and his new Saadhanas earlier this month. Prem's setup with the previous version of the Saashanas was pretty stellar so it was with a lot of interest that I looked forward to this visit.

Prem immediately played some LPs which I had previously heard on my last visit and immediately there was a sense that this was a different beast. Definitely of the same cloth as the earlier iteration but there was a different liveliness to the sound. I will leave physical differences for someone more well versed with the Rethms to describe but (apart from the new driver from Peerless) I noticed was that the silk fabric side panels were now replaced with complete wood veneer. I noticed a new Rethm logo cutout on the bottom of the bass module which lit up nicely - these speakers are very good to look at!

A few minutes into the listening and I felt the bass a little much. I mentioned this to Prem and he agreed. He wanted to tune the speaker during my visit so he immediately went to work on the volume knob of the left speaker bass module. The left speaker is close to a sidewall. Turning it down a touch seemed to sound better to me. We then worked on the bass levels of the right speaker to even out the bass response. This turned out to be a little more work then I thought. The right speaker does not have the same sidewall but instead the room opens out into the seating area.

What was interesting was that the bass levels had an effect on the entire sound. This might seem like stating the obvious but in reality it is a very nuanced effect that Prem with his experience with the Saadhanas could pick out very easily. I was a little lost at times but Prem's ears kept us on course until we reached a bass level that we liked. Once set it all fell into place - the bass levels nicely rounding off the highs and solidifying the mids into a contiguous whole.

A few more songs into the listening and the magic is very real. These speakers are really live and quick. The sound from one of Lata Mangeshkar's LPs just immersed you into the sound. You just feel like the music is flowing around you - the notes from each instrument clear and musical. After a few hours listening to these speakers I felt filled with the music almost in the manner of a sympathetic response of a tuning fork. You really feel the musical energy all around you.

Sadly I could not continue more due to time constraints but the new Saadhanas are every bit as advertised. These are not a next iteration but clearly a next level in the Saadhana line. Kudos to Rethm for daring to bring in a new level of performance from what was an already stellar speaker.

Thanks Prem for another wonderful evening!

Hello All,

I just stumbled across this thread via Google and real am happy I did. I have pretty much always been on Audiogon - same user name - fsmithjack but there are not many Rethm Saadhana V3 owners over there - none that I know off - and thought to reach to you guys.

I also have purchased the new Saadhana's a couple months ago with the newest bass modules and I love them. Would love to chat or hear from others that own or like them because I have never really spoken to anyone about them. Would love to know what you guys are using for speaker cables, interconnects, amps? Would love to know your thoughts on them. I will copy and paste my Virtual System from Audiogon below that lists my gear as an FYI and would advice, feedback or comments for sure.

Thanks so much

Good to see you here Fsmithjack. If you recall we exchanged notes on Ascendo C8R's on AudiGon. Anyways you are in good hands with Prem. He is the foremost expert on Rethm's in this forum.
Cheers,
Sid

Hi fsmithjack

First and foremost welcome to the forum

I have been using Rethm speakers for the last 8 years. Starting from Rethm Second, to V1 Saadhana to V2 and now the V3, I have thoroughly enjoyed all the iterations. The basic sound signature has always been the same.

Over these 8 years, I have used several amps. Dehavilland 845, Redwine Audio Signature 30, Gaanam and Lyrita 2a3. The Lyrita 2a3 which I use currently is a highly modded one. Lyrita is made in India by Viren Bakshi. I use Dave Slagle nickel output transformers, nickel interstage transformers, nickel chokes and autoformer vol control.

Have not experimented too much with cables. I somehow always seem to prefer solid core over multi stranded cables. I presently use Franck Tchangs ASI Liveline Reference interconnects, speaker cable and power cables. I also use his resonators for room treatment as well as a rack whose design is provided by him. And FWIW, with the Livelines I prefer the Maestro outlet to the Oyaide R1

Thanks Sidvee for your kind words. But I am no expert. It's just that nobody on this forum owned a Rethm for several years. So by default all Rethm queries kept getting addressed to me. That does not make me an expert:)

Hey Sidvee,

Yes I remember chatting over at Agon. This is great as I kinda thought I was on my own with the Rethms. I love them but there is a learning curve here for me (low power SET amp / Hi effect speakers) so any and all feedback is very welcome.

I had purchased a brand new pair of Sonus Faber Guarneri Evolution's in Walnut before my Rethm purchase and I was pretty disappointed with them. Before that I owned a speaker I liked quite a bit the Ascendo C8 Renaissance as you know and I really liked those speakers but couldn't quite get to the sound I wanted out of them. To get the most from them as they were quite stubborn they needed big SS (Krell) power. That's what made them sound the best for sure but the SS sound is not what I wanted overall. I wanted that iron fist grip on the driver (no flab or overhang that I grew to hate) and needed deep, accurate, detailed musical bass but with all that realness and palpability and feel that we love from our tubes. I just need tubes and neither of those speakers we going to offer it. I found all of this and more with the Rethms. I think if I dropped $15k on a proper amp I may have gotten to like the Sonus Faber GE's but that wasn't going to happen.

Hey Prem,

thanks so much for the feedback. Cables can be tough. So I went with the Full Loom of HiDiamond cables with the exception of my IC's. My IC's are Darwin TRUTH and to get to those I went through many a ways back and I love them so I didn't want to change them. Well I went with the HiDiamond Conditioner HDX2 and all HiDiamond Power cables and their flagship D8 speaker cables and got great improvement and was quite pleased.

I still felt like there was some more there (my crazy a-phile gut/head) so I tried an older extra pair of speaker cables I had laying around a cheap pair of AudioQuest Type-4 and low and behold there was something there I really liked. They are by no means better by but synergy wise they added a bit of something I really liked. Tough to describe but it is a type of elasticity type of feel to the notes that made each instrument offers more realness that stand out and gives a better feel to the music. More specificity to the specific instruments and overall is very likable effect. On a whole they are not nearly as transparent or as complete and mature a cable compared to the very good HiDiamonds but I would love a cable to offer more of this type of thing which I am ineffectively describing.

So I went ahead and took a shot at another reasonable priced cable the next rung up on the AudioQuest ladder from the Type-4 to the Go-4 which is quite similar design but they use better materials / copper and I like these even better. I like these cables a lot but they are still not quite there overall. They have a bit of a mid-bass hump and again overall are not up to the HiDiamonds but I still sort of like the difference they offer. I know I am kind of sliding down a rabbit whole hole here which I fear so just trying to get some feedback from others that may have some advice info to offer. I understand how significant synergy can be and how cheaper items can sound better because of design that are better synergy matches or other reasons.

So being brand new to Rethm and being brand new to low power SET amps what I am wondering is if there is something about this combo (SET amp of 3.5 watts and 103 db hi efficiency speakers) I should be looking for in a cable? Should I be looking for thinner cables or copper cables or silver cables or some other design approach that works better with low SET power amps and high efficiency speakers? I know this is a very subjective type of thing but this is my first chance to speak to others that know Rethms and I have been pretty much been throwing darts here so thought no harm in reaching out and asking.

Thanks for the time ?

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
