New Speakers - Riddle Thread

Hi
I am not sure about the connection between the Be-718 and the Odyssey Epiphany - these two speakers are in different price classes as well as performance classes. Even sonically they are quite different. The Epiphany is a great example of a speaker with a backrow presentation. The Be-718 while being laid back is completely revealing and its microdynamics are far superior. There are other obvious differences - treble extension and bass on the be-718, etc The Epiphany sacrifices a bit of detail for musicality. Its also here that the signatures of the S520 and the Epiphany differ vastly. In terms of low freq the S520 has a more accurate bass in terms of what it reproduces while the Odyssey goes lower with more heft. The S520 can be placed closer to the wall and that reinforcement helps the bass response and the entire presentation sounds very nice, the Odyssey speakers on the other hand need more breathing space. However, the Odyssey speakers can also fill in for party music when called for with ample low freq extension.

cheers

@mpw and rikhav - no i don't miss the NAD. The Topping is better. I usually prefer superior components. And apologies for the grouchy tone. I am bugged with people running down the tripath without even hearing it.

They sound fabulous in my room. I've pushed my cabinet forward abotu 4 inches so I can give them a foot and a bit of room behind. It's still probably not optimal, but sounding lovely. Will try putting some foam into the ports to see if it makes a difference.

I've also got a modded CD63SE (sridhar's), as well as speaker wire from Usher / Rapport, so it's a very different setup now, and a distinctly superior one! I am 'lovin it'.

Price. These originally sold for about 40k. The pair I have has sufferred some small dents on the corners, and has been a shop demo piece for a couple of years. Therefore I paid 25k. best 25k I've ever spent.

Great to hear this.

I have heard the baby odyssey speakers a few times. They are a very open sounding and musical sounding loudspeaker. They are time aligned too. Very coherent and detailed without sounding bright at all.

I have not heard the topping but I am not surprised that it betters the NAD.

Congratulations !

@avidyarthy - boss these speakers are not in the same league as the Be718. I've heard them compared favourably (online) to the X718 though. Haven't compared them myself. But the Be718s are something else!! no comparison. So no 'graping' either!

@sups - do pick up the Ushers. they're lovely speakers. source? the DV99 is an excellent option for the budget. it's great for music and it's a great upscaling DVD player as well, you can't really go wrong. Else you could look around for used options.

hi psychotropic,

now that the dust has settled, and the wine and bread are on the table -

it is time to ask -

you mentioned in your (first -riddle-) post - that these speakers were mentioned once, and once only, on the forum -

where?

hope you enjoy the music for years to come! (with the present gear!)

And again let me clarify. None of what I have said should be taken as a negative reflection on the Ushers. They are fabuolus speakers still. The philosophies employed are entirely different. The Ushers are more immediate and in your face. The Odysseys are laid back and languid. The Ushers are very detailed and analytical. The Odysseys are more musical. And you can refer to sridhar's post for all the other differences. I picked these because they really appealed to me. Could it be because I had 9 months and hundreds of hours of a different sound and I wanted a change? It's possible. Like I used the same deodorant for a few months, and then some other deo smells much nicer, then I use that for a few months, and the old one suddenly smells nicer.

Anyway, I don't think I should over analyse this. I am in love. One must not analyse these emotions too much.

I would love to do your 'deo' thing on everything .... of course, without going back again to the old stuff yet again.

On everything means ..... EVERYTHING ..... without 'separation payments', only if ....

hi rallynut - for psychotropic -

the epiphanys have completely eclipsed the ushers -

note the strong words he uses- "i am in love" -

and lest the "sensitive" (on this forum) take umbrage -

he says - " i prefer these epiphanys!" -

and rejects the idea that he rejected other speakers while gathering the epiphanys and making them his own!:)

@suri & psychotropic - nice post. Appreciate the humour ( though the joke's on me i suppose ). At the same time its not about sensitivity - at one level. But i suppose thats a debate best left over a beer sometime whenever possible.

What matters is that psychotropic thinks his money is well spent at the end of the day.

mpw

What is interesting to me, Vinay, is that you seem to have moved away from one school of sound reproduction to another - going by the descriptions in this thread.

From Sridhar's post I thought that sounded close to an EPOS kind of sound.

hi thevortex -

more than interesting - it should have been obvious to you - this manifestation of psycho's liver-

see, psycho has malayali blood running thru his (blue) veins-

and - malayalis - love women of substance (love-handles and oiled) and also-
love that "filled-out" sound -

in PREFERENCE to-

a titless kate moss.

Fantastic analysis by the 1 only Suri :clapping: ROFL

Now the difference between the 2 speakers is CRYSTAL, due thanks to Suri's potent analysis :D

I dont think that the Epiphany's are that close to the EPOS that I have heard (which I think is close or similar to the model you have if I remember), they are crossed high at 4 Khz and in that sense are similar (or similar school of thought).

cheers

hey mpw, it was all in jest and with no offence meant. I do understand your post and I am honestly saying that i kept that in mind when writing about the new speakers and the Ushers.

@avidyarthy - tsk tsk very bad, you will now be expelled from the 'happy husbands club' by its president, Suri.

@rallynut - i wouldn't say upstaged :)

@thevortex - hehe yeah, perhaps it's like i spoke about the deo. maybe after 9 months i'll want the Usher sound again. god help me.

@suri - how did you know my tastes in women? do you also know about my giant shakeela poster??

Suri - that brought a smile:)

Sridhar - hmm...that sounds about close to the EPOS school of thought. It would make for an interesting listen - thanks.

Vinay - what is this 'deo' you are mentioning? Sorry this seems to have completely slipped my mind.
