I had this nexus 7 (first edition 2012) lying around at home, and after upgrading to official android 5, it was pathetically slow, lagging, and even kids stopped using it.

was wondering what to do with it, and decided to use it as a source for my 2 channel setup.

This was the plan.

Nexus 7 --> Schiit modi2 uber -- > Sony AV (sometimes a Chinese tube amp) --- > DIY horn Speakers.

Now, I am using my macbook as source, with Vox player, and for a long time wondered why bother with anything else.

Anyhow, had some time free, to play with things, and I rooted the nexus 7, and manually updated it with AOSP Android 6 for nexus 7.

The tablet became quite fast after android 6 AOSP, and most importantly, started connecting to Schiit DAC directly through USB OTG.

The real surprise was the sound quality from it. I am quite impressed how it turned out. the sound had some weight, and now I see it permanently replacing my MBP as the source.

The nexus 7 is now connected through a OTG cable to a USB hub, and then the Schiit DAC and 500GB USB hard drive. it pulls music directly from the USB drive.

Currently using VLC. now that I have seen the performance, I will have to experiment with other players and see if it can be bettered.

Saved me a Pi at a minimum.

If anyone wants to know about my DIY 2 channel speakers, pls check out

1) Any recommendations for android players ? my tab is rooted. so if thats a requirement, I am fine with it.

and if its free, all the better.

2) whats the best way to make this into something like a chrome cast ? I want to cast music to it, rather than go to it, to play content.

1. Poweramp paid version - worth every penny you pay for it. Else Black player or Double twist player are very good free alternatives.

2. You want to stream from phone, PC etc to your Nexus tab -
Plex or Airstream should be able to do it. Controlling the Tablet remotely via TeamViewer is another option which comes immediately to my mind.

USB Audio Player PRO - there's a time limited trial version too for you to try to see if it works with your DAC.

Sounds FANTASTIC!!!
