Onkyo 609: Hissing sound from speakers

Since few days back I have started noticing a hissing sound (+some stray noise) from the speakers at Min volume level. The sound starts after some kind of relay falls in place post power up. The sound does not amplify if I turn the volume up (i.e. say I am on USB and don't select any file but turn the volume up). Also the hissing from FL seems to be lower that the CS/FR (most of the times).

Any idea what could be the cause - amplifier/speakers? Is this something to do with power? Any other reasons when this can happen? What can be done to get rid of it?

Thanks in advance.

My current setup: Onkyo 609+Wharefedale 10.1+Wharfedale 10CC

Check your wire connections... some speaker wires might be loose .. or may be the interconnects are at fault.. which usually causes d noise.. u hav to carry out a trial and error by removing all the input and speaker cables out and one by one install dem back and see if things get bak right

The hissing sound is more pronounced in FR speakers. Although you have to press your ears close to listen to it (maybe u can also hear it 10cms off). And the sound is coming from the tweeter portion in the speakers. Also the sound does not get amplified when I turn up the volume knob. In FL speaker even with ears pressed close I can hear almost nothing. Nothing wrong with the speakers though ( I experimented exchanging FL/FR).

I removed all the input/speaker wires. After which I tried reconnecting the speaker wires but no luck. Any other suggestions?

The problem is due to poor / loose wiring and interconnects. Remedies are:
1. Disconnect all interconnects and clean their ends with isopropyl alcohol.
2. Reconnect all interconnects so they fit firmly and segregate power lines and speaker wires from line level analog inputs.
3. Check you plug is properly earthed.
I had similar issues of the background noise which were corrected from following the same. Now my 10.1s are dead silent with no hiss even when my ears are glued to the tweeter.

Swap the FL and FR speakers to rule out problems with speakers.
Yep. I did that. Even swapped the wires to rule out that problem. The thing is that in FR the hissing is just more louder (~2db) than FL (should be very low ~-81db on onkyo volume scale). Also I noticed that this hissing remains throughout the playback i.e. the audio is superimposed on this. But since the hissing sound isn't loud and doesn't get amplified one doesn't figure out the difference from few feet off.

1 & 2. I am pretty sure I have taken care of (the wire is cleaned & soldered at the ends)
3. Onkyo 609 has 2 pin plug... Can you explain what exactly you mean by "plug is properly earthed"

Hi,
I wanted to know if you solved the issue. I have the same hissing in the FR speaker of my 609. Already swapped speakers so it is not the speaker.

On another note, let me share my own case.

Please check if you have some sort of sound field or virtual surround more enabled.

I had the same problem with my system when I put on Dolby virtual surround on.

Turn off all the effects and check.

I think this could work

Mate ,
Do not worry as its the noise floor of your amplifier all channels driven, check the specs on the manual. Try this, disconnect all the speakers except for FR & FL, turn the amp into stereo mode and slowly raise the volume you'll find much less of the hissing there. These AVRs are not designed for the highest levels of distortion minimisation, therefore they have a higher noise floor with all channels driven than any stereo amp... Your amp is fine as the hissing would not be noticeable when playing back any material or movie..

Cheers
Ravi
