Ok! I know this question might have been asked many times here. But I do have to make a quick decison.
I am planning to upgrade my 505 and looking for budget receiver not a high end one :)
I am comparing onkyo 508 or denon 1611/1911
My usage will be 70% music and 30% movies/others and I am more concerned about SQ

Please help me with selection of the right receiver

Thanks,
Vikas

Thanks for the replies ! I searched but could not find comparison between Onkyo 508 and denon 1611.
I am mainly comparing these two. Please share your opinions.

Apprecaite your help.

Thanks for the replies

I have gone through the specifications. however in my city there are no dealers of these products so cannot audition the two model(onkyo 508 and denon 1611)
Onkyo 608 and 1911 are out of my budget.
Onkyo has burr-brown DAC while denon has AKM.

I am assuming now that denon will be better for music

Have you tried the Orb Audio speakers along with an Onkyo? You should try it...
I heard it at a dealer here in Mumbai and was amazed!

I am not an HT person, but this combo did it quite well for both music and movies. The movie screening I did (Gladiator) had amazing impact. Then I heard/saw a blues concert and it left me speechless... the music was dynamic and had a palpable quality despite it being an HT.

I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a one-stop solution for both music and HT.

Here is the link to the ORB's: Home Theater Speakers - Home Speakers - Orb Audio

If you want dealer details, lemme know!

What are they priced @ ? Did u audition the sub sat combo or bookshelfs?

for 70:/: music

avoid both ,look for a good integrated stereo amp or pre power + speakers

as for music play black do avoid a bluray or dvd p stick to a CDP

ur preference is music so avoid onkyo...........Denon is all rounder

Although we have Onkyo at home I would still second Denon (more musical).
Reason I went in for Onkyo vs Denon was bcoz we ran out of funds as the Denons were more costlier at VV & Sons - Deira Dubai.

Having said that, we are quite happy with the Onkyo's quality. One suden "monsoon" power surge destroyed our Sony TV and Jamo Sub but the Onkyo withstood the crisis - like a battle tank.

Hope this helps.

Sometime back I auditioned CA Azure AVR at a shop in Juhu and was very impressed. Even my wife felt it was a lot more musical than our Onkyo.

If you really need an AVR then I'd suggest you audition Arcam or Parasound which are generally considered to be more musical. I once heard Arcam AVR350 at a friend's place and was mighty impressed with the 2 channel stereo capabilities.

Of course, like others have already suggested, I have now gone traditional 2.1 channel stereo with (first) NAD C352 upgraded to Arcam Solo Music and now moved to Naim Nait XS - so far it has been a delicious musical journey.

Actually Burr Brown DAC is more musical and processes in a analogous way, which is more natural. AKM DAC is more like calculations and doesn't process audio like analog, which is actually unnatural

Thanks everybody!
So burr-brown will be more musical than AKM? I already have burr-brown in my alpine car stereo but no idea about AKM.
My Music is ripped in lossless format and stored in Ipod and xtreamer.

I wish I could have auditioned both before making decison but unfortunately no shop/dealer in indore

Hi Khandelwal,
Considering 70% reqmt for music, I would strongly suggest somethin in line with Subhash's comment:
1. I assume that your budget for HTIB that serves music too, is approx 40k.
2. If you want new equipment only, get stereo setup consisting of > Norge-2060 amp for 8k + Usher S520 spkr pair for 23k = 31K
3. Get separate 5.1 amplified speakers of F&D make (Chinese) for 6k
4. Get LG /Samsung DVDP @ 3k for CD/DVD/USB playback

Total cost of above = 31 + 6 + 3 = 40k.
I've heard each of the component above, and I can assure you that music performance of stereo setup above will knockout the Onkyo /Denon you have shortlisted. Yes, movies would have lesser impact than onkyo/Denon, but you would still enjoy resonable level of clarity and spectacular explosions even with the F & D 5.1.

Do convey if you need further details on above.

Of course, do auditon if possible and then decide.

Hi Sonosphere,
I am not creating a new setup or looking for HTIB but upgrading my receiver as I have run out of HDMI ports. I already have Jamo speakers and Stereo setup with roland Monitors(please see the signature for my setup).
Need inputs on onkyo 508 VS Denon 1611 receivers

Thanks for your response!
