Pairing Polks with Onkyo

Well, I have wide collection of audio cd's both of Hindi and English and prefer to listen only un-compressed audio on cd's or flac's. I use my Blu-ray player for audio cd's and my HTPC for flac's.

One question comes to mind...

Does the Polk's need to open up or break in, as I've read in a few articles and forums that new speakers need time to open up and once they do they sound much better.

So you have very good source material :)... When you engage the Pure Audio mode when listening to Stereo material, AVR will output in 2.0 mode.... It will defeat all tone controls (Bass, treble & crossover management)... The AVR will treat your speakers as full range (Large)

When you engage Pure audio mode when watching movies (5.1), the AVR will output it in 5.1 (All channels are treated Large) & .1 (LFE) will be processed as it is on the source...

In short, Pure Audio mode of AVR will play the content as close to the source fed....

Your speakers are pretty new... It will improve as days go....

The upgrade fever has bitten me and now comes the Sub-woofer. And finally bought the...

Polk Audio DSW PRO 550 wi Wireless-ready Powered Subwoofer.

Will get the delivery, tomorrow by evening, so waiting eagerly for it.

Congrats Saket, its good one and sound good with polk fronts.

Thanks.

I hope that this sub woofer is much better and gives me a total satisfaction over my current Onkyo sub, which I feel is really under-powered. At times it cannot handle certain low freq and distorts.
I guess that's the difference between a low end and a high end sub.

I would be in a position to tell once I get the delivery and installation has been done with proper settings.

I have same SW but not wireless one.It is good for music and goes deep too.Its not as fast as B&W sub,but feels the room if set correctly.Only issue is I can make out that volume is at 12 O'clock position as its digital with no indicator. So automatic mic setup fails to get correct readings.

Finally, got the sub woofer and the setup done.

Used a 3 mtr shielded cable with gold plated interconnects, which came along with the sub from ProFx. The cable looks and feels good and its free.

My initial setup gave me what I wanted and would be doing some more tweaks if my ear can hear any difference. I have cancelled the crossover setting on the sub, as the receiver will handle it at 80Hz. The phase is set at 0, couldn't hear any difference in other settings so put it at default. The remote of the sub has 4 room optimizer pre-setting buttons, I've set it up at corner, as the sub is at almost the corner of my room.

The volume is set at default ie., 20 (0-40). It has a volume up/down button behind the sub as well as on the remote. Each button press to change the volume blinks the front LED to a specified combination, ex. vol at 25 (2 long blinks + 5 short blinks). Though, I felt that the volume at mid level ie., 20 was less and the bass punch was missing and I had to increase the overall volume to get more bass. So, I gradually increased the sub volume by 2 steps and heard the same music for sometime and finally set it up at 30, which sounded apt.

Overall, the sub is good and the bass tight, but I feel it needs a little more improvement.

Could you suggest some good English music albums, which has good soundstage with thumping bass. I would love to own them.
I tested the bass with Chemical Brothers's - Surrender - Under the Influence, it has a hell lot of low freq and it sounded good.
I even have the DTS Music Demo Vol 11 and playing Dave Stewart's - Every Single Night is amazing. Infact this was the same music being played at the demo room in ProFx.

I like the thump in the song "Chris Jones - Long After You're Gone".Initial thump is very enjoyable on this SW.

Indeed the B&W Audiophile recordings were wonderful, especially I listened the Chris Jones song repeatedly a few times. Hearing them, I felt like I was in a totally different world.

Thank you very much.

I was searching for audiophile music recordings and came across this article on stuff.tv. This was published on the 15th Feb, 2014 and lists about 30 albums which are audiophile grade.
Just wanted to share with you.

Just a question... as you also own the same sub, what volume do you generally keep your sub at. Does keeping at higher volume, degrade the quality of the sub, or its fine?

I did not check exact volume level, but it must be close to 25.I did not find any degrade.Perhaps your SW may sound more deep after few hours of play(burn in).
