Planning a Balanced input for my turntable cartridge.

This question always in my mind past 2 years - why is one end of my turntable cartridge connected to ground while they also have audio information. I researched and discovered many DIYers have converted this as balanced input. I too am planning a simple opamp based balanced to unbalanced converter and check how much of a improvement in S/N ratio I am able to achieve. Btw, my turntable is noise free and that is not the only objective of making this. I want to discover whether my cartridge is able to digup more details and transparency as an outcome.
