Plasma TV 1024 x 768 resolution confusion?

I am planning to buy a 42 inch plasma TV (Panasonic TH-P42X30D)

The native resolution on that TV is 1024 x 768. Now I know that is a 4:3 aspect ratio. The TV though is physically built in a 16:9 aspect ratio. So how does this work?

1) Does the TV have rectangular pixels instead of square?
2) What will be the effect while watching standard 4:3 TV content?
3) What will be the effect while watching DVDs which are 16:9 or wider?
4) What will be the effect while watching Full-HD (1080p or 720p) content?
4) Is it possible to buy a TV with the correct 1366 x 768 resolution? Will the pictures in both of the above cases look better in this format?

Please advise. If you're in India, which 42 inch plasma would you recommend? I don't want to bother spending extra money for 1080p resolution so I'm happy with HD-ready.

Ok, i will try to explain it the way i understand.
the native 1024 x 768 is 4:3.

but yes, each pixel is 4:3 rectangular (not square), thereby u gets 16:9.
how does the scaling work ??... probably as below...
every input signals are scaled to 1366x768.
at the final step, every 4th vertical line is clipped, thereby converting it to panel native of 1024 x 768 (4:3). the rectangular pixel on panel stretches this 4:3 signal back to 16:9.

4:3 content will look just like 4:3 with black bar on both sides.

16:9 will fill the screen, wider will show black bars on top and bottom.
full HD and HD just as above.

In plasma you get 1366 x 768 only on some samsung 50" models.

at 42" you get either 1024 x 768 or full HD.

samsung 43D450 is a good buy at 33-35,000.

Thanks for the clarification.

So could you rate in the order of lowest resizising distortion between a [1266 x 786], [1024 x 768] and [1920 x 1080] for watching DVD movies in an upscaling DVD player which upscales to 1080p?

IF your source is 16:9 there won't be an issue of distortion.
for good quality upscaling, set the DVD output to 720p for HD ready TV and 1080p for full HD TV.

Don't bother with 1024*768, get at least 1366*768. It has at least 30% more details in terms of pixel count.

I don't know why Panasonic sells these, I got one by mistake and I don't like it (can't qualify more, just don't like it compared to the Full HD res).

SEe, this is exactly what my confusion is.

Between a 1366 x 768 and a 1024 x 768, what exactly will be the difference? I speak in terms of picture quality, loss of detail due to rescaling, chromatic aberrations, aspect ratio issues etc.

As per most of the users, the below is the optimum viewing distance:

Screen Size---1080p optimum distance ---720p optimum distance
42 inches 65.89 inches (5.5 feet, 1.7m) 98.83 (8.2 feet, 2.5m)

So, at these distances only you can differentiate between HD and FUL LHD, beyond that both look the same.

I got Samsung PS43D490, my viewing distance is 15ft and I am very much satisfied withe resolution or PQ. Earlier I too thought of buying FULL HD model...but at 40k.......this is a deal......

Hi, dont get into so much detail............depending on your budget you have 2 choices Panasonic or Samsung. If you can stretch the budget then go for any panasonic neo pdp models like VT, V, GT, ST. The U and X series are not pdp. If you dont want to spend so much then samsung would be better. Plasma looks best in low light so always demo in low light at the store.
