Hello friends,
Lately I ve been thinking about using my wharfedale 9.6 floorstanders for both home theater and stereo setups. Currently its hooked on to marantz SR6003 AVR. For the dual purpose, i require a splitter switch which can take in two amplifier inputs and switch between them as required to drive the same speakers. I ve heard that similar powered switches are used in demo rooms. Searching in the net reveals some discontinued models on this. I want your valuable inputs and suggestions please.

thanks

thanks a lot murali sir...this one appears to be just the opposite of the requirement where one amp source is driving two speaker sets :)....i will keep looking sir.

Hi ganny boy,

In your case, connect the amp and AVR to speakers terminal (output) and the WH 9.6 to the Amp terminals (input) and you are done with it. Simple isn't it.

I can understand the pain of those ppl who want to use the same speakers for stereo listening as well as the HT 5.1 setup. Finding a good speaker switch is near to none.
After exploring the Speaker switches on ebay and other websites, found only handful of them which were not upto the mark [No Gold plating, No Banana jack, quality of internal wiring used etc etc]. So ventured into the DIY route and hit to our good old SP Road, Bangalore. Items required in making this high quality speaker switch are listed below
1. 1-0-1 Rocker 10A switch [Amar Radio Corp SP Rd] (Rs 50 per piece 2 Nos) = 100 Rs
2. 24 lugs & Sleeves [Amar Radio Corp SP Rd] (Rs 60 for 24 pieces) = 60 Rs
3. Gold plated MX Banana sockets [MX components Store SP Rd] (Rs 30 per piece 12 Nos) = 360 Rs
4. QED cable for interconnects [72 strands] , I had some spare with me.
5. Finally the PVC Casing, this can be done at Chickpet, Bangalore [PVC cutting shop] (Size 5in X 4 in X 2.75in) = 200 Rs

So the overall amount for this beautiful DIY Speaker switch comes to 720 Rs. Which is way better than the speaker switches available online.
I have put few pictures at different sections of assembly. Pictures speak for themselves. I am really happy on the outcome and there is no reduction in the SQ whatsoever.

This is really SMART!!! Can you tell me the location/name of the PVC cutting shop in Chickpet? Google map?

EDIT: Also of help would be a simplified straight line wiring diagram.

Thanks

Pls find the schematic wiring diagram attached. Also from the Burma Bazaar side your have to enter into the BVK Iyengar Road. Follow for 500m. You will start getting electrical shops. You can ask one of them to direct you to "PVC Cutting" Shops, there are many of them. Hope this helps

cheers,

Are these kinds of products available in India, Bangalore in particular?

I also like like the DIY option later posted by vin_eme (thanks vin_eme). It's just easier to buy it off the shelf if cost isn't so high.

Sudhir, thats the sad part i tried all the routes and shops in bangalore. But its not available except online (As you had mentioned). But again these are lightweight selectors. So if you want to go for audio grade (Gold platting, Banana sockets) which were my requirements, it would be difficult to find them online as well. So the best way is DIY, you can satisfy all your requirements.;)
