Hi All,

I am in a process of building/buying a ready made Preamplifier board for my DIY LM3886 power amp, could you please let me to choose which one to buy/build among these two

1) Preamplifier board with Tone controls (BASS, Treble, MID and Volume)
2) Preamplifier board with only Volume control

I see on different forums that people commenting on sound quality loss when using preamp with tone controls, people say without tone control music sound natural.

I am looking for a musical preamp with good sound quality and detailed music, I don't mind missing the tone controls if the preamp without tone controls sounds better.

Another question is I see two types of preamp Discreet and Opamp based which one is better?

Thanks for taking time to help me out.

Best regards
Bilal

in the forum a super simple pre is listed by sachin
you can pick that
or go by the JFET preamp route (get the fets from a good ebay US member )
here are the 4AUdio fets in 600Rs shipped EBAY Link http://goo.gl/X8fmcp
you Just need two ,the extra 2 FETs you can send to any other FM for his pre .

UNO pre is here :Building a pre amplifier using Jfets to work with a Gainclone chip amp, based on a desing by Carlos Machado.
its also simple when i give preamp layout in veroboard as well as DIY pcb format
journey of getting the parts is enjoyable
and will be helpful for future diys

It is said the FETs have tube like sound , one reason to make it !

I recently built a preamp with two opamps (one is buffer stage) OPA2134 with option to set the gain using 4 way DIP switch and integrated Regulated (LM317 & LM337)CRC power supply. SQ is really awesome...very detailed. There is no tone control and I only used a pot to control the volume.

Thanks,
Bibin

Bibin, that is such a clean job you have done there. It's eye candy and then I realized that the pcb is not a chinese one but your own. Checked 'dac' online and couldn't find it there. well done.

Thanks for the reply and the information.

Could you please advise which one will be better among? I know it is difficult to comment by just seeing images, but some guesses will help me a lot.

I will also check out the possibility of building the preamp by Rod Elliott, only thing I am afraid that I am not finding circuit diagram with suitable suitable for it. (I recently burnt a Tone control bought from DIYCart as I directly connected 24-0-24 DC without voltage regulator to it.

Thanks again for all the time spent to help me out.

Bibin could you please help me with the circuit diagrams for preamp and power supply, from where you sourced the PCB, I see diycomponnets has a PCB for OPA2134 preamp.

HI Bibin,
Had a look at your wintek 3way tone control. can you post its specs? What is the stock opamp? Is the PCB alone available for sale at DAC?
TIA

This looks nice

Be VERY careful when handling stuff that include power (AC and/or DC). I wonder why you didn't use the regulator in the first place.. One should take into consideration volt and ampere of psu used for particular circuit.

thatz good news bibin .. such well built pcbs are key components

avesbilal,
dont add those tones (and muddy-fi the hifi) .. small corrections in foobar eq sd be enouch..select just plain buffer stage aka preamp board

Wow, just wow, Bibin. The quality of your work is sublime. On a side note, check out Peter Daniel's designs. I have a feeling you will like it. Here is the link to one of his sites but you can also search for peter Daniel DAC.

To OP: I have used a Audio GD DAC that had a inbuilt volume control and I have to say it was one of the sweetest sounding DAC and preamp I have heard.

Looking for small tube buffers and JFET designs at diyaudiocart (bibin)

Yes they are on the way....:) Tube PreAmp & PowerAmp will be available shortly. Already started working on it. Let us also join PM Modi's Make in India Campaign.

OPAMP (--my advice try and believe--)

I agree with this... Each OPAMP has its own character....
