Precautions to be taken in purchasing used Amplifiers

Thanks a lot. By signal caps, do you guys mean the ones in the power section? There are 2 big capacitors (3300 mfd/25V) whose output is fed to the PCB. Do you guys think one of those could have gone kaput?

Those seems to be power supply decoupling caps. signal caps generally range from 1 to 10 uf.

NO No these big ones are power supply filter caps. By signal caps we mean the capacitors which are in the line of input signal of the amplifier i.e. output from source like CD etc are connected to the input of the amplifier (Its back panel RCA sockets) and the signal goes through filters/ preamp and then to the power amp. This is the signal path and whatever capacitors are in this path are known as signal caps..... Ok loosely described.:)

If pot is suspect, it is not difficult to replace them with new ones. Proper cleaning is IMHO almost impossible. So better replace it with fresh piece.
