I have a 5.1 speaker system to go with my computer, but my computer is placed in such a place that I cannot wallmount the side/rear speakers nor have a raised platform in the side or rear [rest 3 are placed on the computer table on either side of the monitor and 1 right in front of it, but not hiding it]. I currently place the side/rear speakers also on the table [in front of me] :( Suggestions on optimal placement of the side/rear speakers to get the surround effect?

I don't think u can achieve surround effect with placing all 5 speakers on the front. It's actually a waste of money buying 5.1, if u didn't have the provision for speaker placement .Should have gone for a better 2.1 setup at the same budget IMHO.

As suggested, placing the rear speakers in the front is not a good idea if you want to enjoy surround audio. You can use the speaker system without the rear speakers in a 3.1 mode but you won't hear surround sounds.
