A friend is looking to buy a 2TB internal HDD, what are his best options? Flipkart is around 6K, and Computer Warehouse on MG Road is around 6100. Is SP Road a better place to get it?

TIA

It's a device that should, in the worst case, last at least three years, hopefully five or or more. When one counts the cost over the lifetime, saving a hundred or two of rupees counts for very little, and it is best to buy from the reseller considered most reliable and trustworthy. Out of those, of course, that stock the model required.

SP Road will usually be the cheapest of the lot but your friend will have to battle traffic getting there, park some ways off and then walk through narrow crowded roads. How much of a margin your friend can squeeze depends on bargaining skills and also the seller at SP Road.

External HDD's have generally been wellpacked from Amazon/Flipkart/Ebay but there have been reports of horrible to non-existent padding/packing for internal HDD.

Every HDD I've bought from Flipkart has arrived without proper packing -- just cardboard stuffing. Two were DOA (but both were replaced quickly).

theitdepot.com has listed 2TB HDDs at Rs.5840.00 (Toshiba), Rs.6100.00 (Seagate Barracuda) and 7120.00 (Seagate (SV35).

I've bought from them many times before. They are Chennai-based.

We have touched on this in other on-line shopping forums.

Every [I think] HDD that I have bought in India has been simply packed, sometimes only in an anti-static bag. What this means to me is the the suppliers buy OEM bulk supplies, thus bringing their wholesale prices down, probably by a considerable amount.

Any problem? Could be, if one needs to claim warranty.

It is also a pain in the neck if one does not have a tin of miscellaneous PC screws and bits and pieces, as no fixing harware, not even screws, is included.

This applies both to HDDs I have bought online and to those I have bought in shops.

How to avoid? Look for, or demand, something in a consumer-sales box.

On the other hand, I have not had a problem with my disks, and some might consider the absence of the extra packaging to be an overall advantage :)

I always thought only USB drives come in box packing until I googled the images.
But I haven't seen one yet in brick and mortar stores..
However I am sure the box-less ones are also covered under warranty.

^^ Never seen any internal drives available in shops like this! They probably add a healthy margin for this fancy packing :p

Thanks for that ebay link. I do need to pick up a 1TB drive fairly soon. :)

Oh ye of too much faith!

With a failed disk, a couple of years ago, I was looking for the manufacturer warranty status. When the serial number was rejected, I eventually found that the company (I forget which one, WD or Seagate I guess) information said It's an OEM disk, go enquire with whoever you bought the built machine from.

In the end, it turned out that the hdd was a couple of years older than I thought, and the warranty had finished, but I made a mental note about the OEM thing. Others may have a different experience: I hope they do!

This does happen more often than it should. In fact I recently came across a dealer in my city who was sourcing genuine sealed HDDs that had their warranty period autostarted (apparently in the case of WD disks, the warranty auto starts a certain period after the manufacturing date). He was selling these for a huge discount. For example, A 500GB disk was being sold for prices as low as 1500.00. His stock ran out fast and he's not found a similar cache of these yet.

Hah, that's kind of what I noticed on a brand new external HDD enclosure (one of those Expansion/Backup things from Seagate) I got from Croma (online via Ebay), but why the clock would start ticking on an external HDD enclosure I don't know. Returning via Ebay and all that crap was not worth the time and effort, so I just swallowed the few months I figured I lost on the warranty. Hopefully I did not, I guess I will find out if I try to get warranty service.

Well, I've been buying my hard drives from a particular store in SP Road and never had any issues. I always insist on the latest import date with the latest firmware. This way I'm sure that I get a drive which has not been lying around for a longer time which makes mishandling out of question. As hard drives are prone to get damaged internally if mis-handled, it is very important to buy a hard drive rather than getting a couple of months earlier imported product.

I do pay a little more than these online stores but I am at peace, as I see the drive and then buy it.

Today's price of hard drive at SP Road...

Seagate 2TB 7200 RPM - 5750 +Tax(5.5%) = 6050/- Model No. ST2000DM001
The green ones are 200 less.
