One of the most useful way to find out how well your system is capable of revealing micro details is to use recordings from DPA Microphones sound sample.DPA Microphones :: stereo-recordings
The samples are made with different mics and placements of a same performance. You should able to hear the minor differences with ambiance and tone in each placements and technique. I was lucky to have received a SACD on grand piano recording which consists of 56 tracks of 7 recordings using 8 difference techniques and microphones. The differences are subtle and distinguishable easily using a good quality headphone or in Ambiophonics setup.
Try tuning your system until you can identify and distinguish all the tracks. You can also burn the wav files and use it as a referance recording when you audition speakers.
