Popbox V8

Finally after using my popbox V8 extensively, i am writing the review of the product:clapping: with all the pros and cons of the product. Here we go.:yahoo:

Size:

Popbox V8 is very small in size that in can easily fit in your palms.

Casing: its casing is metal and hence it is little heavy. But that does not give you the feeling that you bought a cheap product.

Connectivity: Well PB V8 lacks on connectivity as it has
USB Port-2
HDMI port -1
Ethernet (no wifi)- 1, for wifi you have to spend Rs.1000/- additionally .

Rest is optical audio out, composite video and component video.

User interface: Its user interface has disappointed me badly as its quite archaic. You can not customize it and has a dark grey background and not any colourful one.

Remote Control: Its remote control is its plus point as its backlit which is very very useful whenever you watch movies by switching off your lights. As most of the times you push the wrong button and then you get interrupted switching off your device, pausing, rewinding or forwarding. I mean to say you tend to push the wrong button but you wont face this problem with PB V8.

Performance:

When it comes to picture performance I think PB V8 is best in its category. Its upscaling features are so great that even a SD movie will give a feel of that full HD. This is the only feature that made me buy PB V8. Everything about picture is so good on screen including contrast, colour etc. The images are sharper and I din't find any flickering/freezing problem with it. It's only when that your FPS ratio goes above 24p that you will face that problem but who thee hell need it above 24p?

If movie has multiple audio tracks then you can change the audio tracks by pressing the audio button. Same is the case with subtitles. You can even change the colour of subtitles in settings.

If it is connected to the internet then you can download subtitles directly and play while watching movies and you can alter the timings of the subs if its not in accordance with dialogues.

Also, you can download a movie poster and save it as folder.jpg in the movies folder. Your popbox V8 will show the jpg image as poster on the folder so that you can easily browse through the list of multiple videos.

Apps: Unfortunately PB V8 has lesser number of apps as compared to its other counterparts and its not going to have xbmc as well in near future which is a disappointment.

Audio:

It decodes virtually all the formats:cool: available including hd audio like DTS-HDMA, Dolby Tru HD etc but I am facing a problem while decoding AAC as my AVR (Yamaha RXV 473) decodes it as PCM 3.1 which is a disappointment.

Overall Performance and Verdict:

Considering all things put together, I would give Popbox V8 as 7/10 :)considering that it lacks on some features but on the other way if someone wants performance then PB V8 is the way to go.

Please post few pics if possible (incl. interface).

Use this tool MP42MKVAC3 to convert the files with AAC codec into AC3. Takes about 10 mins and you can enjoy Dolby 5.1 :)

@hemchandran....it costed me Rs.9500/- inclusive of everything.
@baiju & Calvin...shall post the pics soon.

Don't know why but it did not work out. Only the video gets converted to mkv and audio remains as it is.

I believe you haven't changed the settings. I'll check my personal laptop and give you the steps. Currently posting from office :D

Any other product that you can recommend to counter these shortcomings?

Any other product that you can recommend here?
Does Popbox have a higher version that takes care of these issues?

I think for connectivity, you should be looking at Himedia, WD TV Live, Asus HD, Amkette EVO TV.

Popbox has higher version that is Popcorn hour. So you can have a look at their products, bit expensive but good ones.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
