Rs.15,000 setup reviewed: Cambridge Audio S30, Topping TP20, NuForce Icon uDAC

^^^

I tried setting up a couple of demos, but that didn't materialize due to me or the vendors being busy. I went and checked out the JBL Control One (no proper audition done). I did take my amp, but the dealer wasn't very keen on changing his setup. He hadn't heard of the Topping, and looked surprised.

I went the next day and just bought the Control One from the same dealer. Did not have the energy/enthu to test out various speakers with the Topping, and I figured that just going and auditioning speakers on their own, for a complete noob, would be a waste of time. So relied on feedback here and bought the JBLs.

Have been using it for past couple of days, and I am not disappointed. Can't really provide feedback on the quality, "colour" etc of the speakers and other nuances, but it works for me. (I had pretty average expectations - needed better sounding system than a 6 year old "mercury 4.1 surround system" for PCs ;) ) , and the Control One fulfilled/surpassed them very easily).

One thing I can say, is that loudness is not going to be a problem for me.. I didn't need to go more than 10-11 o clock positions, for normal listening in a moderately sized room.

The bass seems good enough, but need to try out a few more CDs. The trebles seem nice, hear a lot of good music on some old/new tracks.

Thanks a ton to avidyarthy, psycho, kittu, and others, of course :)

Still need to do a proper speaker placement. Have some wierd issues with the PC being present in my living room, and no place to put the speakers in front of the listener at seating level position due to room structure. Need to check out if wall mounting at around 8 feet height etc is advisable. Will start a different thread on that.

Now on to music content, sources, trying out playback from PC, etc ..

I have also been bitten by Topping bug listening around rave reviews from the experts, having placed the order on 10th Aril now awaiting the delivery to happen. In the meanwhile I am trying to find out the perfect speakers for this little powerhouse. My main music will be current bollywood hits as well as ghazals etc. The source will be Pioneer DVD player to start with. My budget is around 15K for the bookshelves. As discussed extensively Cambridge Audio S30 and JBL Control one seems quite fit, however I want to explore if more expensive 15K range would actually add more 'sugar' to the pudding. Usher S520 seem out of range for my current budget. I am inclining towards PSB Alpha B1 BS. Will appreciate if members cam share some light on this vis a vis Cambridge audio or Ushers. I will also audition Topping with PSB once I receive the amp however looking for some expert opinion. Any other speakers in this range??

Be careful while pairing. Speakers that present a low impedance load or an uneven impedence load that dips to nearabouts 4 Ohms can be a bit troublesome for the Topping. The PSBs are measured to have this kind of behaviour, so I am not sure how well they'd work together. It would still be pretty good, but nowhere near as good as with the Ushers. But the great thing about the TP20 is that you can take it around all over the place and audition speakers with it. All the best.

Nice review. I posted a question there about comparison with Bose Companion 5.0. Please reply.

With the new open baffles ready, I am tempted to try the low power amps. The sensitivity of my speakers should be at least 97db.(that is the rated sensitivity of my full ranger and I am not using crossovers). I am using marantz pm6002 at present. The volume knob position is kept at 8 oclock for regular listening . At 9 oclock, it is unbearably loud.

I am confused between a car cd player with built in amp (22w per ch being standard. So i expect it to provide at least 8-10 clean watts like topping) vs topping.

I already have a DC12v 10A converter. So i thought why not to go for car Cd player with Aux in?

Has anyone compared car CDP as amplifier to topping? What kind of amplification it uses?
Is it chip based? I didnt clearly understand MOSFET.

If i use a decent head unit, it should cost me around 6k? Basic pioneer are available from 4k onwards. As they go higher up in cost, I see that there are a lot of features added but the amplification specs remains same.

I suppose that car cd players are built to tolerate 4 ohm impedance(all car speakers are 4 ohm). Besides that they have remote control which is very helpful for night time listening.

So guys, please tell me why i should go for topping and not for Car cd player. Has anyone compared it side by side using same speakers and source?

If at all it doesnt work, I can always put it in my car.( I am so lazy about car audio that if at all i need music in my daily 5 minute travel, i use my mobile handset with built in speakers. So my car still does not have a cd player.)

Is this combo still available or has something come along to replace it at this price point? Sounds like a great deal if you can get it still.

pyschotropic, have you listened to the Arko 80 or 100W active bookshelves? I have an arko 80W hooked up to a meier porta corda 3 (the total combo cost me less than 7k :D), and it sounds quite decent with very nice highs, and not too bad low end (mids could use some improvement though)

I'm using Hertz bookshelves with my T20. Its an Indian brand from Calcutta. Very good for a budget setup. In fact, doesn't sound like budget kit at all.

Would exceed the 15k limit though.

Can you give a link to hertz bookshelf speakers?

@ Kittu, I don't think they have a site. The guy Kausik Mitra is active on facebook. If you need his contact details, please let me know.

I'm also using Hertz bookselves made by Kausik Mitra in my bedroom setup with Pioneer stereo integrated amp. Would say this pair is very decent and punchy at this price point. I can post a spec which he sent me as a brochure. He is active in facebook. PM me for his contact number if you are interested Kittu.

Please post the spec and how much you paid for it?

How much did you pay for it? How would they compare to the S30s?
