Hi FMs
I am having a well working AU 617 which I am using. I saw an ad today for sale of AU 517 with full tech specs. Can someone enlighten me which is better - 517 or 617? What should be the price of a good 517?

HI, Inever heard about AU617.
i had 02nos of sansui au717,D11.
AU 717 is an excellent amp.AU517 also very good.dual mono design, slightly less power at 65w when compares to 717.
but very very good.

Sorry Bro, mine is AU 607 not 617, silly typo error! Can you kindly compare the 2 please?

AU607 is more advance generation model than AU517. Sansui had a newer technology in that, which they named as X-Balanced.
It was the beginning of that era, further followed by the AU_ _ X series and upto the legendary and much advanced AU G99X. .
Circuitry was more advanced. It was faster in terms of slew rate. Distortion was much lower, Sounded cleaner and more responsive than 517.
AU517 was further refined and replaced by AU519 in those days. It also had a new technology called Diamond Differential DC by Sansui. Later followed by AU D11.
I had used many models of Sansui starting from AU7700, AU 7900, AU11000A, AU20000, PRE CA5000 & POWER BA5000 & also had the privilege to own AU917, AU919, AU D11, AU X501, AU X901 & AU G99X in those days.

It's very unfortunate in my life that at a point of time I had to choose between being an audio enthusiastic audiophile and my career as a professional . I used to spend ton & tons of time listing, evaluating and tweaking audio systems.:yahoo: Those days are gone. No time for all that now. One by one I traded off all my assets. Still miss them. The bell still rings in my memories ...ah those days.:p Maybe sometime, someday maybe I will again find myself addicted to that obsession.:)

sorry to hear that.we hope you will get your wish.
ok coming back to the thread.
i think au517 have little edge on the bass dept when compares to au 607 because of the the loudness function.
517 have deadly glue issue.please be prepare to completely recap the amp:o

Thanks a lot to all the FMs for their valuable feedback. Just a last question now - what should be a fair value of a 517 now?

Do you feel an Au 517 is at least on par sonically with an au7900?

just saw this thread is 10 years old..but who knows maybe theyll reply..

so..which was your favourite? and how does the au d11 (also known as au d907f extra) compare to say the original au707?

D11 is excellent amp when compared to 717, everyone has their own taste, for me d11 is winner all the way

AU 7900 had an active tone contol circuitry.
Wheres AU517 had a passive tone control circuitry.. it is a part of a system which had a grafic equalizer with it. So it is basically incomplete without the equalizer. Many will disagree but that is how Sansui had designed the whole series of AU 417, 517, 717, 917. 419, 519, 719, 919.
With regards
Vivek

Sansui 517 in my opinion sounds quite flat in equilisation similar to today's solid state amplifiers whereas au7900 is equalised to boost vocals just as in vinyl LP Record sound. So in my opinion Sansui AU 517 is superior & flat sounding compared to AU7900. You can go ahead with 517/717 or get a 919/X1 better than Sansui AU7900.
