Well,Sennheiser HD650 comes with a beautiful looking carton which makes it a really precious collection ,but Sound quality is what really matters when it comes to headphones like these .

Sennheiser HD650 is sold as audiophile headphones .They have an open dynamic headphone design. That means they will leak sound ,so not good for a noisy environment and keep in mind that others will be disturbed if volume is too high .

Specifications of these are :

  1. Technical Data
  2. Nominal impedance 300 Ohm
  3. Contact pressure ca. 2,5 N
  4. Weight w/o cable ca. 260g
  5. Jack plug 6,3/3,5 mm stereo
  6. Transducer principle (Headphones) open, dynamic
  7. Ear coupling circumaural
  8. Cable length 3 m
  9. Frequency response (headphones) 10-39500 Hz
  10. Sound pressure level (SPL) 103 dB (1 Vrms)
  11. THD, total harmonic distortion 0,05 %
Whats in the box:
  • ? Headphones
  • ? Detachable cable,
  • ? Adapter
  • ? An instructions manual

Construction:
Construction seems good, but its not made of metal only .half of it is made of Carbon fiber .According to Sennheiser that helps in lessening the vibrations and makes listening more pleasurable. Who knows? ..hhee

Sound quality

I have used them for around 400 hrs and just after 100 hr bass which was little muffled, got deep and articulate.

Well, These have laid back character with rolled off high, which makes them very pleasurable to listen music with them, as highs are not very harsh on ears.

Bass.I know many people are only concerned about bass and all and I must say they are not very bassy like my DT770 pro 80ohm ,but IMO HD650 are way ahead of DT770 pro 80ohm .Its mid bass is very deep and very well defined ,whereas bass of DT770 Pro 80ohm is very boomy and not defined at all .

Treble
:
Its treble is really good ,but its highs are little rolled of ,thats the reason they are very smooth sounding headphones and sometime people refer that these have laid back character .

Headphones tried with different Genre's like Classical (western eg Schubert ,Beethoven ) ,Indian Classical (eg Ravi shankar ),Rock linken Park ,Led zeppelin etc,POP,Trance (Ministry of Sounds ,Tiesto etc),Instrumental etc

Burn in
:120hrs

Headphones used with ESI-juli@->MHC-V515 as amp or D NE900 (line out )->MHC-V515

right now I'm looking for an amp and I might go for an tube amp .

Price (MSRP)$599

Price paid $450 :(

That is nice info ! how easy is it to drive and how comfortable is it to wear ?

excellent headphone choice. What other brands did you audition before you got this? I did check this and Beyerdynamics before I went ahead with a AKG since its one of the best for classical music. However its very power hungry.

Very good audiophile grade headset. My cousin uses the HD 600 and just cannot do without them even for a single day so I guess I know how you feel...

Sennheisers are great always liked the quality. Ive read reviews of your model to be the reference standard for all headphones to be compared to.

Ive owned HD212 Pro, HD555 and presently own the HD RS130 Wireless Headphones.

i have good news for Headfi guys....
HD 650 is available at sp road bangalore ,with bill, for approx 25K may discount upto 10%....

stay tuned for the shop name

Nice Review!

If my memory is correct, you also own/owned Philips SHP9000 or some other high-end model. Right? Have you compared 650 with 9000?

best

I have used AKG K701 (not owned ) AND beyers' DT770 (which I have ).

Well, right Now I'm using ESI Juli@ and old Mini Hifi component system combo to power these .I'm keen in getting an amplifier .Since these are 300ohm so its real hard to use them with portables ,unless you have portable amplifier ,but many people have suggest that HD650 ain't good with portable amplifier .

No,I don't have SHP9000 .Right now I have Beyers DT770 pro 80ohm and this one .

in b/w
how is Philips SHP8900?

The HD 650 are excellent, but I actually ended up preferring the more neutral HD 600. Though I own both and switch up between them as needed depending on the mood.

If you can, use a balanced source and balanced amp to see how radically and favorably these headphones respond. Its whole different beast and that slight "slowness/veil" is completely gone.

Well the HD-800 have been announced and hopefully I can get my hands on a pair from the first batch. They are a bit more expensive though at $1399. Still, these are the new Sennheiser flagship phones and I hope they beat the Stax OII electrostatic setup I had. Check them out:

Sennheiser HD800  OOOOOOOMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGG...........

Looks are awesome, For now I can only dream about the heavenly sound.

Another great milestone achieved by Sennheiser.

My relation with senn started in early 2005 when i first bought senn mx350(small earplug),
then in mid 2006 got my hands on Senn's most consumer popular PX100,
At that time i just used to drool at senn hd 650 pictures for hours, even senn hd 555 was not under my budget,
but i knew that someday, someday.....

Then in 2007 after saving i got into audiophile league i.e. senn HD595,
still hungry for the best.

Finally in late 2008, guess....................
YES Finally senn HD650, The best for sure,

But NOW HD800 , I think I am slowly falling for it, to discover the best again
, to give the ears the utimate luxury:cool:, elephants inside stomach have already started complaining:mad:, damn those ears.:p

Since we are talking about headphones here, I thought I will post this review of a headphone I never heard of before, which seem to be creating raves in the market. Ever heard of Phaiton ? They have three models between 200 to 300 dollars. One of the on line magazines has this to say about these headphones - 'One is the Phiaton MS 400 headset. I'd had headsets that cost $50, $80, even a clean $100, but this headset was so sonically clean with such crisp highs and pounding lows, even with my ripped MP3s, I couldn't get over the difference.'

For a full review read Two Headsets, Head to Head - The Phiaton Moderna MS 400 - 3D Graphics, Audio & HDTV by ExtremeTech.

Has any one used these headphones? If what Extremetech is saying is true, these have the potential to sweep the market.

Cheers
