hi all,

Already bought onkyo TX SR 705 with wharf 9.5 6 months back and now using it in stereo mode..

Now would like to upgrade my system to 5.1... Have some queries regarding it...
My room size is length x width x height = 15 feet X 10 feet X 10 feet.. no dedicated room for HT setup, so stuck with living room..

1) Is 7.1 setup necessary or 5.1 enough?

2) Please recommend a good subwoofer for my setup within the budget of 20K.. should be ideal for both music and movies, but preferred more for music..

3) I am attaching the layout of my room. Pls comment on setting up a HT in this room...

Since you have Wharfedale speakers, the best would be to look for Wharfedale sub SW150 or SW 250. They should come within your budget.

Cheers

A : Depends actually.........but for the record, mostly all current movies/BR have 5.1 channel output. But an AVR can split the rear channel in to 2 rear back ones and can convert that 5.1 to 7.1, so if you are very particular about this 7.1 is for you.

A : Venkarcr already replied that

A : Well ofcourse your display and fronts should be on the 10 feet wall, rear should be at your ear level. Sub can be placed on either of the corners of the 10 feet wall......

Are you planning for projector or flat panel TV? With a door on all four walls you will have placement difficulties. Would suggest to atleast close the door opening on the left of your pic (on the 10ft side) if thats possible. ideally there just needs to be one door to the room and even no windows. But would also largely depend on your needs!

Krish, you have too many windows and doors in your proposed HT room, but not to worry unless you are also worried about acoustics. Best is to choose the wall that 1000w has suggested (10ft wide with one door, no window) for your display device. From the picture, it looks like a 42 inch TV can be mounted in the center of that wall without interfering with movement. If you plan to go for a projector, you can do so by using a retractable projector screen and ensure nobody opens the door while you are watching a movie.

You will also have problems with speaker placement (especially front) if you decide go ahead with the wall that we have suggested. You will have to move your speaker away from its position, when you are not listening or watching a movie. How have you positioned it now? Posting a picture or a similar drawing might help.

if u want informed advice, u'ill have to provide more complete info
1. what kind of setup do u want? will it be a TV system or a PJ or both? 2. since this is not a dedicated HT, will u be able to darken the room and to what extent? 3. there are many doors. do u use them all or can u keep any of them permanently closed?
4. since this is a part-time HT what kind of seating do u envisage?
5. how serious a movie fan r u? do u want the best possible setup or something less but still enjoyable? 6. and what is ur budget and r u into DIY?

Actually i dont have a flat panel tv now.. but will buy it within 4 months..

Now i am using my receiver with wharf 9.5 in stereo mode with a 14" CRT tv.. Next month planning to complete the 7.1 setup..

@venkatcr Since you have Wharfedale speakers, the best would be to look for Wharfedale sub SW150 or SW 250. They should come within your budget.

whats the price for wharf sw 250? Does it come under 25K?

Now i have positioned in my bed room.. But the problem is my wife is not allowing me to keep it in bed room as i like to hear music loudly...
Also my bed room contains three big racks... so speaker placement may be difficult.. thts why opted for living room..

can u tell me the possible problems in acoustics caused if i positioned it in the room (pic posted in first post)?
If i keep the doors shut then does the acoustics problems get solved?

@giddavr if u want informed advice, u'ill have to provide more complete info

I am planning to go for a 42" flat panel tv...

I cant permanently close any doors as all other rooms are connected to this room..

if i shut all the doors and windows then the room gets darkened to about 70%.

Actually i havent thought anything about seating arrangement till now.. planning to use normal plastic chairs.. no money to spend for sofas......

i am more to music than to movies...maximum 2 or 3 movies per week.. I think for my room, setting up the best possible HT setup is not possible.. but i would like to have a setup thts very much enjoyable.. like to have full involvement when seeing a movie..

i can roll 65K next month and planning to invest 60K after three months.. I usually try to do all the technical things by myself.. but dont have much idea about speaker placement and all!!! will try to do it myself....
