Hi All,

I already have Yamaha 367 AVR with me. I just wanted to confirm from you guys that should i buy a new AVR which decodes HD Audio too. Will that make any difference to my listening experience. What i have experience till now that whether i play a Bluray disc or downloaded HD movie, it all sounds same to me.

I made a post few days back to sell off my Yamaha system. Was planning to get Onkyo 3400 since it has all HD decoding drivers plus my room size is also small so i guess Onkyo should be enuf for my room. But right now i am thinking to retain the speakers and just sell off the AVR. Sooner or later i'll get a new bigger room.

Please suggest.

Thanks,
Vikram

It is very difficult for someone to advise you on this. Everything boils down to you how you plan your requirements and, of course, your budget. A full 7.1 with a 1080P screen/projector is the ultimate you can get in a HT system. How far you want to go will decide what equipment you get.

If you do not see or hear any difference between a Blu-Ray, and a non-Blu-Ray, there is no point in upgrading.

Cheers

You itself anwsered your question. You dont see much difference between those.
But Have you tried with some other AVR which support Doly True HD etc?. HD audio has more bitrate than the normal DTS audio. So sound quality will be better than the traditional one. But there may not be much noticable difference.
But it is adding cost by investing in new AMPlifier and you need to buy the original Bluray disks..etc to enjoy HD sound. Most of the downloadable content will not have true HD sound.
First listen to AVR with true HD sound and go ahead if you are affordable for source materials and new AVR.

Thanks guys for the replies.. I asked whether there will be any difference in sound when i am watching bluray disks.. and as per the replies i guess there's no point to get the new AVR as of now coz i mostly watch downloded movies.

Well i'll surely be testing with the HD AVR to see the sound diff but that may take some time as i've to find sumone with that AVR.. :P

Anyways thanks... :)

Cheers..!!

Yes Venkat.. i do not see any diff between bluray disk and downloaded HD movies in terms of sound. Thats what my question was. Should i buy a New AVR which can process HD Audio so that i can see the difference. My current AVR do not process HD sound and thats why may be i do not get better sound when m playin bluray disks. I have few bluray disks. Whats the point of buying bluray discs if m not even getter better sound.

Hope you get my point now.

Thanks

i would say there is lot of diff between 367 467 667

@sagarvikram sound will be same in all the AVR(in terms of quantity)

but their differ in quality
audition your self with some good set of speakers and avr there is a huge improvement !

Prithvi.. thats wat i wanted to know. i am not saying that changing the AVR will make a diff to my downloaded movies sound but i guess atleast i'll get a better sound when i am playing bluray discs.

Thanks all for the replies.. :)

Cheers..!!

Where did you hear HD-audio?Did you play on your current setup?
Did you try original Bluray disc?
Now there are 2 chances-
1.If you DL original BD copy & play with current setup, you may get a secondary sound in that BD coy.ie.many discs has 2 English audio.1st original HD & second regular DD/Dts.So certainly you wont hear any difference.
2.Some of the Bluray copy come without HD-audio,so same situation again.

These are the original disks which i got from my friend. I have Sony BDP370 with me. I started this thread bcoz i thought playing an original disc will sound much better than downloaded movies just like you are playing original CDs and MP3s but that didnt happen. And m sure original disc has much better sound, its just that my AVR can not process it.

Thanks,
Vikram

Can you update the connection of BDp with AVR?
As AVR cant process HD-sound,so you may not judge exactly it unless listen dedicated HD-system.

I've connected BDP thru HDMI. I tried optical also but no improvement.

Thanks

So you are still getting a regular DD/Dts sound which a BDrip has.So you are right as both soundtracks are same. Now unless you connect BDp to HD-avr,you cannot hear true HD sound.

Yes.. that exactly was my question. So after this discussion i guess i am sure that getting av HD AVR will give me some improved sound for my BR dics.. :)

Thanks,
Vikram

Hi sagarvikram, Yes of course. Always original is original. Bluray discs sound quality will be a lot better than downloaded materials. You can feel a real theaterical sound . Because bluray disks will have a raw sound. Downloaded materials will have compressed data so there will be lot of loss of quality.
If your intention is to watch movies on bluray disks then you can still use your existing AVR.Why do you want to change your AVR when you can watch movies for bluray disks?. But your avr will not support TRUE HD sound as this is latest trend. For dolby true HD and dolby you may feel it will be slightly better.

Most of the bluray disks have support to either DTS or dolby even though they encoded with TRUE dolby HD. Like all DVDs comes with sound option of DOlby or DTS.Still you can watch movies with your existing AVR.

Hey, thanks for the reply.. but i never said that m gonna buy a new AVR. I just asked whether i should go or not. After getting all these reply i came to conclusion that HD AVR will definitely sound better (for blurays) and its not like that m not happy with my current AVR. I purchased this system few months back so if i sell it now i can get a good value. Later or sooner i'll be getting more Blurays and may be i'll stop downloading movies (if blurays becomes cheap :P) and m sure that gonna take atleast a year or so.. :) So i can purchase AVR later..

Thanks..

Now its matter of upgrade for better sound. So if you are happy with current setup, you can postpone the decision.

Yeah as of now i'll postpone it bcoz mostly i watch downloaded movies.

Thanks to all of you guys for responding..!!!

Yes even I have indefinitely postponed my decision to switch to a new AVR. You could still enjoy TruHD sound through a BR Player having 5.1 analog output on your AVR.

Also, while Dolby TruHD and DTS Master Audio will DEFINITELY sound better, however if you instead upgrade to better speakers (I feel bigger branded speakers give better sound), you may still get better sound from your current AVR. Nevertheless... I am very happy with my 8 year old AVR and while I drool about 3D HDMI capable receivers, I am not really missing much on my current AVR.
