Soft dome tweeter repair

I got a real surprise when I removed the grills of my Quad Lite speakers to find that two of them have pin holes in the dome. Any clues how this could happened? Will this affect their performance? How do I go about repairing (or replacing if required) them?

Shocking! I see holes in the rubber surround too.
Could be wood borer (?)

Yes, does look like some insect. My hands and arms are suffering from insect bites after handling the speakers . Any repair ideas?

This is normal in most of the places where Ant's and insects are present ! Have seen countless cases of these.

There is no repair option for you,as in there is no way to repair the same dome unit (not unless you are well versed with the working of tweeter and its assembly) ! You may replace the dome unit,Am not sure whether Quad supplies only the dome like B&W but surely will be able to get a replacement tweeter ! Contact the distributor Designer Audio Mumbai and ask them for the same.


If you want to look at some stop gap solution or some quickfix as they say,then you can use the Fevicol Fabric glue and cover the holes,be very careful and apply on a drop just enough to cover each hole individually !!

As with sound quality,yes there will be a loss in quality due to leakage of the air through these holes.

If you were using this pair till date and if you were not able to find any difference in sound, so far, why not take up up the fevicol-drop solution?

Yeah, I think I will go for the Fevicol and then take it from there.

do you hear any difference in SQ ?

If the answer is no, then i suggest not to touch the tweeter at all, use them as it is till they die, and replacing them is also not a good idea cos, the insects may damage new tweeters too, as they might be hidden in wood itself

Yeah, I suppose that's another thought. As it is, I'm no DIY guy. Thouugh, not much of DIY in applying some Fevicol!

Well its not rocket science but not so easy as well !! But whatever the case,Please read carefully what I have posted,its not the regular fevicol used for woodwork !!

It has to be the very specific "Fabric Glue" which is by Fevicol (Pedilite Industries),Since the dome unit is fabric its the ideal glue which is specific for fabrics (usually used for art work on Sarees and Dress materials for ladies)

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!!"

But since you have visually seen the holes, your mind will now play tricks & convince you that the sound has 'changed' & probably for the worse.

Suggest you act wisely from here on & don't panic!

in all probability it is not the tweeter but only the silk dome which is ruined nd the culprit is most probably insects.

teh tweeter is inside and protected by the silk dome

if you know the tweeter make and part number you can get a dome..its easy to replace

I would say leave the tweeter as it is (if you cannot hear any difference in SQ) and treat the bigger issue here, i.e., mite infestation.
If this is the work of wood mites then the speaker enclosure is in danger! Treat the speaker with some safe insecticide.

Use a clear silicon sealant instead of fevicol.

Yes, Soundcraft, I had noted that it was the Fabric Glue and not the regular Fevicol. Appreciate your concern.

The speaker enclosure appears intact from the outside. Maybe the bugs could have gone in thru' the bass port??
Can I use any insecticide or are there some not advisable for speakers?
