Thumb rule is you need to consider speakers which would cover / output maximum frequencies between 20hz-20khz. The Sensitivity should be above 88db which will put less strain on the amp. The amplifier you would hook these speakers up to need to be efficient enough to continuously provide required power across all the frequencies..
Remember a Speaker dealer / home theatre guy provides a demo in a special computerised constructed demo room and so everything sounds too good to be true, fortunately for you and me there are tons of user reviews and videos available on the internet which can help to influence our decision before any purchase. Another thing to keep in mind is that a dealer is a dealer....he will convince you to purchase speakers which are not getting sold just to get returns on his investment...(to make a sale happen for a non moving product)
Most imp....you need to factor after sales service and warranty....which the dealer will provide no doubt but you need to ascertain how long would a repair or replacement take...end of the day you would be the one facing all such challenges...
I would bet on the Tannoy or Wharfedale models.....again...you need to see what appeals to you and your budget....take the following for demo....
* Video or Audio - Hotel California LIVE version
* A clip scene from '2012' where they drive the Limo crazily across the city to reach the airport....a lot of frequencies involved here and hence you will know how the speaker handles this....
* Luciano Pavarotti / Andrea Bocelli video or audio singing "Nessun Dorma"
* Your favourite music (Ghazal / Sufi / regional)
Hope this helps...there are a lot of other speakers which you may not have considered or shortlisted which may perform at par or even better, have value and after sales service...a simple google search will help what you are looking out for...
