Hi all

SONY Speakers Anyone?

For some reason Sony India has totally discontinued their earlier line of Hi-fi separates including Sony Speakers for Home audio, may be finding that there is not enough demand for them in India as compared with Home Theaters and TV sets.

However in the international market, Sony continues to sell Speakers at remarkably low prices which seem to be decent enough for the price level and are bought by many building their Hi-fi systems on a budget. The reviews are pretty good. Some of these Sony Speakers are:

Floor Standing Speakers - SS-F5000
Floor Standing Speakers - SS-F6000
Bookshelf Speakers - SS-B3000

I wonder if anyone knows if Sony Speakers (other than those specifically meant for 5.1 Home Theaters) are still being sold anywhere in the country. if yes please share information about the source. Anyone who already owns them is welcome to share his / her opinion about any of these Sony Speakers. Thanks.

Where are you getting SS-F5000 from? Are you importing them? I have read reviews that they are good for small budgets. You cannot expect too much from it.

Recent models sold by sony are not so impressive.

I own a Sony HT DDW880 and paid Rs.25000 almost 2 years back. I think they are discontinued. It is a AVR based HT with 6 Satellites and One Sub-Woofer. It works awsome for Movies. You have to hear it to believe. But music is okay.

Thanks for your response.
I am only looking for Sony Speakers for use with an Integrated Stereo Amplifier for playing music and not as a part of any Home Theater. These speakers are available world wide and the purpose of my post is to find out if these are also available in any part of India or if anybody already owns them. Sony India used to sell them in this country some years back but have, for some reason, stopped selling them here now.

Which Amp you are using. There are so many other brands available in the market which are better than Sony.

Definitely and I know that. However looking at the amazingly low price (as low as $100 or Rs.4600 for floorstanders) of these Sony Speakers and the excellent reviews by many users on various other Hi-fi forums, it might be worthwhile to consider / audition them.

I have recently bought a Marantz PM6003 Amp from the UK and have shortlisted Monitor Audio Bronze BX2 / Deli Lektor 2/ Tannoy Mercury V4 to pair with it. I also intend to buy a Marantz CD6003 CD Player and Rega RP1 Turntable if I can find these at competetive prices here. Sadly in India all these products are sold at 1.5 to 2 times the prevailing international prices - which is a discouraging factor while considering to buy from within India.

Hello,

I have been using following Sony speakers for a long time now in a 7.1 set up for my 340 sq ft living room. Sources being PS3 80 GB with move, Denon 1940CI, TS HD+, Bravia 40W300A LCD

2 X floor standers (2 X 6.5' bass drivers, 1 X 4.5' mid range and 1' tweeter, 180w RMS, 89DB sensitivity, Freq res 40 Hz to 25k Khz)
1 X Center - 120W full range ( 65 Hz to 25k Hz, 89 DB)
4 X Surr - 120 watts, single driver, full range ( 75 Hz to 25k Khz, 86 DB)
1 active sub - 150 watt, 12' driver, front firing (30 Hz to 200 Hz adjustable, volume, phase and freq control. UMC has set it up at 40 Hz point)

Earlier these were driven by Denon 2106 amp (100 watt / channel) and now driven by UPA-7, UMC-1 as pre-amp. To my personal liking, I like the way they sound and best part was comments from my wife that they are sounding more musical with UMC/UPA as compared to Denon amp. Usage is 50:50 music (all kinds) / movies.

Had purchased these in December 2006 from Sony world, Aundh, Pune and now these are not available anywhere in India (dealers & website too).

Dont know how helpful this will be but just thought of sharing.

Thanks!

I have a Sony HT DDW 840 purchased in 2003 and it sounds amazing till date for movies.........I think I purchased it from Sony India for Rs.35,000/- approx.......

Emotiva spearates will definately sound better than that Denon model.
Where did you get Emotiva products and what price?

Not sure about the models, but I have seen SONY 5.1 setup with floorstanding speakers in Reliance Digital.(Not HTIB) AVR and Seperates.

@ dj 79 : There was a another thread of mine under "what should i buy" section 3-4 months back. That will answer all your questions.

Thanks!

Hi folks,

Please allow me to bring this thread back to live since I am buying these Sony SS-F6000 from eBay, which costed around 9.6 K (post coupon use) for the pair.

My research shows for Sony SS-F6000, the user/owner reviews are mostly "very good" "VFM" "more bang for less bucks" etc, whereas onlookers are cynical about Sony speakers and have expressed all doubts about the drivers to crossovers to cabinet.

I have taken a complete chance here keeping in view that the closest new budget FS would cost at least 15 k. and probably will not lose much if I use them as surrounds with my Sony STR-DH520 (again, the budget 7.1, which I had sourced from eBay for around 14K)

Sony STR-DH520 is presently connected to Polk RM6750 and already delivering the expected.

Anyways, I am going to soon find out and post my observations.

Meanwhile, any input regarding this set up will really be appreciated.

Cheers!

are you getting these from ebay india. am also in the lookout for budget FS. plz provide the link if its from ebay india.

I also have Sony Speakers in 7.1 setup with towers, mid and satellites. Bought them in 2006 and using with my Onkyo receiver. Great bang for the buck.

Reubensm, I will definitely update all on the Sony SS-F6000's performance once I receive and start using it.

Amit, please specify the model# of your Sony speakers. We would also appreciate if you can throw some light on the various parameters like highs, mids, lows, sound staging etc of your Sony speakers or any other A/B comparison you may have made with other makes.

Thanks!
