Speaker Kit-Insane value

Mark who owns Meniscus is an exceptionally good guy, I have bought stuff from him more than once and spoken to him a couple of times. This sue looks like an exceptionally good deal and an easy way to get a decent system.

Oh, Polk audio knock off. I can get real polk's, take out the drivers and send it out. I have suggested that before. Not just polk, infinity, altec, anything. I have a center that I built that way, not just 1, 2 centers that were made that way, very very good speakers.

Cool.

Well, soft dome and a woofer with a rubber surround = Polk in my book. May be a mis nomer. But among the first manufacturer to use soft dome and a mid sized woofer was Polk. So I guess, I should have said - like polk used to make in the 80's.
Of course after that everyone uses that - kef, B&W, infinity, athena, jamo and many many more.
But the basic idea is, soft domes sound very good with a lot of types of music.
The woofer has to work to a higher frequency in a 2 way. So put in a 6-10" with a rubber surround that has an ability to work to a higher freq - 4-6K. Even if you lose the lows. Cos a sub woofer is to be used with it.
That's all.
Cool.

Thank you for the "education". Care to explain the rest of your comment?

I can buy old polk or infinity or other speakers for less than that. Of course its used, not new, but it will be working fine.
And I could remove the components and send it to whoever wanted it.

I am going to do this to a few speakers I have and see how that goes.

Cool.

Sorry this post sounds a bit flippant. Sorry about that.

What I should have said is - Soft dome + mid bass style woofer = very good fail proof combination, possibly premiered by Polk audio in the early 80's and heartily copied by AR, Advent, athena all the way to probably someone with a brand name begning in Z. Including me.

Cool.

Any feedback on the GR Research diy kit. Not much review seen from the initial builders.

Hi Hari,
I wanted to write a detailed review of my build (X/LS Encore bookshelves) but forgot about it as time went by.

I am very happy with its performance. The tweeter surprises me often with its resolution and sweetness. High-frequency percussions like triangles and chimes sound very sweet without being edgy or being overly sweet or rolled off. It is quite transparent to the source program material. The upper bass is surprisingly good in my room - no boom, just nice tight bass. Of course there is no lower bass to speak of (these being small speakers), but luckily I listen to very less music that requires ability to produce deep bass. But I do miss it sometimes when listening to small ensemble jazz with acoustic standing bass. One needs a large driver and cabinet with lots of power to be able to convincingly reproduce such bass. But it is capable of a fair amount of dynamics contrasts. It is a pleasure to listen to western classical orchestral numbers that have wide and sudden dynamic swings. It can startle with sudden upswings. With my current placement on top of (stupidly) heavy stands about 31 inches from front wall to rear baffle and 17-1/2 inches from side wall to outer side baffle, it throws a deep sound stage and have respectable width. Being mid-sized bookshelves, they image accurately. Pinpoint, in fact, especially after I recently upgraded to better interconnects.

The speakers have been able to keep up with all and every upgrade I had carried out in the chain. It has never shown itself to be the weak link in the chain. It is a very good kit. Of course some of the (mad) extras done (by magma, who built the cabinets) to the cabinet also contribute to the overall sound.

What's your user name on diyaudio ?
You might have missed out on a decade or two wrt the small drivers and soft dome usage ? The soft dome was patented in 1967 !
Cheers.

I am "srinath" on diyaudio and AK. As well as most of the other forums I am on.

The exception is GSTwin.com - where the admin renamed me to "The Buddha".

Yea I know soft domes have been around a long time. They are nearly fool proof for tweeters, they sound great on every type of music.
If I recall that famous Ohm walsh was a soft dome.

Cool.

The soft dome tweeter was invented and patented by William Hecht. It was first introduced in the Fisher XP10 that was the TOTL model from Fisher in 1965. Hecht built these speakers. for Fisher. The company that he later founded, Phasetech, is still very much active. Their PC60 speaker is probably the father of the two way with soft dome tweeter formula.

Regards,

Oh yea forgot those fishers, I had a pair 2-3 years ago. The XP series was the series sought after by lots of people. I found em a bit underwhelming. I like the ST series. Great ones to mod and they have no collector value, so you can go what you feel like on them.

I didn't realise they were as far back as 1965 (4 yrs older than me - cool) I have plenty of stuff from then though. Including whole speaker cabinets drivers and all from 1954-55.

Cool.
