Speaker Wires : Chennai

:) am sure the Gurus here know more than my simple listening ears. I did travel the higher cost cable means better quality route and finally used simple cat5 cables and now feel happy with what i hear.

For people who want to try it out themselves following are few useful links

Again may i reiterate I am suggesting these from pure personal experience and am sure the audiophiles know better

for airy and gossamer highs, I recommend cable hand-crafted from spiders' web, but it's a hard, sticky job!

Seriously, though, I've got the cable our EB engineer used to give us a temporary single-phase supply when our house 3-phase cable burnt out. This thread makes me tempted to give it a try, but I don't have any plugs that will fit my Cyrus amp apart from the ones that the shop I bought it from fixed to my cables, which are nothing special, only thickish copper.

The spare mains cable is aluminium, though. Probably that would make my music sound very grey.

but, do you imply that those thick and dense copper cables will allow the listener a reasonable measure of airy and gossamer highs?
It would be an interesting place to start. I'd put money (well, say... the price of a kilo of onions!) on over-the-counter mains cable sounding at least as good as over-the-counter network cable. I'd only be backing a hunch, though.

I am sure the mains cable will do the job. I am not trying to say one is better than the other. Just giving people options to try :)

A noble response :)

Interested to know, though, how you are using the cable: are you using muliple cables? do you twist or plait them?

I had used 3 lengths to make one cable. I am waiting for my goodies to come by sea and then this time hoping to use 4 lengths per cable as i need to make it around 5-8 meters long for the rear speakers.

Once ready hoping to get permission from SWMBO to invite interested forum members to help setup the system.

Hi Guys,

I need your help again on cables for my rear speakers.

I have Onkyo RC270 paired with Monitor Audio RX1 and CS1 for fronts and Center channel respectively. I have used the DIY Monshine Cables as in the below link. It is three 16 Gauge wires with two wires for One connector and other wire for other connector.

Just realised only part of the message was published.

The question i have is on suggestions for connecting JBL control 1 as rears. It is atleast 30 feet away from amp including the wire routing etc.

I saw few recommendations like
1. MX OFC 14 Gauge in Vinsun Agencies
2. DAC 14 Rs 83/mtr In Pro musicals Egmore
3. belden cable - 130 .mtr

It would be helpful if you can suggest me something.

Thanks and regards,
Prasanna KV

I'd always go for for thick when it comes to speaker cables.

Networking cable is designed to counter specific forms of interference and crosstalk that affects a very specific kind of digital signal.

If I wanted to make my own speaker cables, the last thing I'd use is network cable. The first thing I'd use is... mains cable. Heavy duty mains cable.

But hey... you've tried it and I haven't. :o

I completely agree with you. My personal belief is that 80% of the performance boost to be had from a cable comes from its thickness (or low resistance in other words). There are a myriad of other factors that come into play but I really don't think they are serious or important enough for entry level (or even mid-level) hifi that many of us have. 10 gauge or 12 gauge of copper wiring of any kind will probably be more than sufficient, including heavy duty mains cabling.

If I remember correctly, cat5 and cat6 is about 22-24awg. It is probably above average quality copper but my guess would be that it will be good only for short runs and for less demanding speakers.

Please note: I'm only talking about hitting an above average music quality and "bang for the buck" and cost constrained system setup, not a no-holds barred setup or someone who is looking for exactly "that" kind of sound.

I am in the hunt for the cables - just a couple of metres for my centre speaker. Hope to get it from the above sources mentioned in Ritchie street. Thanks in advance, Guys.
