Speakers damaged on transit

By air/surface/rail/water- booking/delivery may be done by those so-called `efficient' courrier firms, handling always is done by illiterate labor who consider these packages as mere`load'. Packages do get thrown around, and not all but some packages get damaged- this time it was yours.:sad:The whole episode is very disheartening for peaple living in small cities where there are no good showrooms for AV gear. Buying pre-used gear from anywhere will be highly risky, as transhipments en-route will definitely damage the goods. Today I am able to enjoy my turntable bought from one FM, only because he sent it through one of his aquaintances to Kolkata and I carried it personally in my car from Kolkata.:ohyeah:

Being a small dealer my sincere and serious suggestion about speakers transit ......

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Do not ship

I have sucessfully shipped turntables , cdps , tape decks in fact some of my TTS reached to owners where they played WITHOUT any adjustments

But twice my speakers are damaged in the past I politly refuse any shipping of speakers..

Speakers are MOST fragile. Think of this it is WOODEN box unlike metal casing of AMPS and the drivers by construction is not sturdy structure.
Also diver mounted with only 4 ,6 to 8 screws this itself becomes very weak structure,

And woodcrate packing becomes expensive for individual , difficult to make and does not make economical sense for low priced speakers. Again there is no gurentee against "creative destruction" of courior.

Check this DEnoms thread how his speakers damaged in courior..

I've also had a disastrous experience shipping a pair of brand new Fostex drivers to Sh. aks07 in Jamshedpur many moons ago. All he received was some bits and pieces-all this after bringing them all the way from the US in baggage.

When i was in similar need recently this is what i did -
1. I won't trust the courier companies. Even if they had the right intentions i don't think the labourers understand all this.
2. I won't trust the transport companies too unless it is point-to-point i.e. no transfers in between.
3. Parcel by bus is offered by many people movers. But even here point-to-point is very important. Otherwise, i'm not using them.
4. So if you can confirm point-to-point "YOU" will go and lift the package and put into the luggage section of the transport - if this is not allowed, i'm not opting for it. At the destination, the other party will be present 30 minutes prior to arrival and will personally watch and pick it up from the luggage compartment of the vehicle.
5. Only then your sensitive items are safe in India.

I guess I am very lucky that my AVR and my 5 speakers reached safely from Bangalore to Thrissur!!!

I was very very sad to read this thread. Serves as a warning to all planning to ship.

Shivam,

That is really sad story and nice of you to consolidate matter for buyer. From my side - I have few used speaker binding posts suitable for this purpose. If you need to replace and could not find new then please let me know. I can send a pair of it to you. Just PM me your address if you need it. Consider it small help from my side.

Sad to see these beauties ruined by reckless handling.

Regards,

OMG, this is the worst service I have ever seen. Definitely courier company should bear the loss. Wet cartoon and without cartoon, it's completely carelessness.

I got pics of the outer packing from the buyer today.

One of the speaker boxes is totally wet and disfigured. Other one reached without the box and packing material!!!

Just to give you an example how well our FM pack, my AMP was neatly packed in its org box with its thermocol etc then a thick layer of thermocol around it then again another thick strong box and yes it was sent by DTDC Air Cargo

Do you also have photos of the condition your parcel reached the buyer?

In this case I was the buyer :) the shipment was received in immaculate condition and within 24 hrs of its booking

I feel that it is a matter of luck. I had shipped LPs, Amps, Speakers etc with no damage in similar packings. However this time there was damage. As I can understand from similar stories from other forum members, no amount of packing seems to help. Even a wooden crate with foam packing could not save a gem of a radio.

For future - I am not going to ship anything which I will not be comfortable in dropping from second floor of my house or playing football with. (That is how our beloved parcels are treated by these idiots !)

Once I went to the DTDC collection office/ distribution office to collect my parcel as none was at home when they came to deliver, I was very surprised to see the way the parcel was thrown, kicked, moved and what not. They seem to be least bothered about the content, size, weight, nature of the parcel. Really pathetic.

Shivam, I am very sorry about your misfortune. I also honour your sense of responsibility and willingness to bear considerable financial loss.

I shall also now worry very much more if shipping or awaiting anything expensive and fragile. Almost to the extent as per hemantwaghe's advice, of ...just don't.

Funny but completely agree :)

Update on the deal - Buyer feels that further transporting it back again might damage them more (I agree with his point of view). He is going to get the speakers checked by a few knowledgable friends in the field and then we will decide what to do.

Pointers and help offered by some members here might be useful to him so I have forwarded a link of this thread to him.
